Norwegian guy introduction

StefanF

New member
Hey guys.

I'm new in this forum, just making my first post to introduce myself.

I've been browsing the older posts here and it seem like a good resource for tips, experience and help if needed.

So about me. I'm a 30(well will be this year) year old guy from the northern part of Norway.

I started detecting more as a thing to do with my kids than a hobby that should prove to take a great place in my life. Needless to say, i got hooked pretty fast after i borrowed an old Fischer machine from a friend one weekend and actually dug several old coins and other artifacts.

The place i live is of great historical significance, and alot of the farms in my surrounding area has fields that date back to the earliest of settlements here, around 1000 AD +- a couple of hundred years. So you see when people have lived and dropped things in a span of a thousand years.... there is VERY much to be found :)

I started out with the Fischer F5 about a year ago, and i love it. Great machine once you get to know it. Also i love the fact that all functions are at my thumb and that way its easily adjustable for any change in soil conditions or other disturbances. I will probably go for a more expensive detector eventually, but for now i think i'll stick to my F5. Maybe get a couple more coils.

I've had a great year with many awesome finds. 15 silver coins(1624 as the oldest one) 4 old bronze rings, silver shoe buckle, Handmade silver signet and a variety of old copper coins dating back to the mid 1700. And a WHOLE lot of other artifacts like buttons, buckles, musket balls.

Thought i'd share some of my finds in pictures right here :)

Looking forward to exploring this forum and maybe get some of my questions answered, as i still see my self as a newbie in this game.

Happy Hunting guys! :)

Stefan F

Some really nice finds already. I, too, am looking forward to seeing what else comes along. Welcome! HH jim tn

Looks like you are doing great. You already jumped back into the 1600s. I am stuck but pretty happy in the early 1800s. Hope to crack the 1700s some day. Thanks for sharing your finds.

Welcome. Didn't you know there is no such thing as casual detecting.. To Late your hooked !!

Now all you can do is detect, and detect, and detect some more..Oh and post here all your great finds so we can enjoy your hobby too...

welcome Stefan
great finds your making :clapping:
glad your on board :detecting:

Thanks for the welcome guys! :)

Right now the ground is frozen outside, so i can't detect fields. So right now i'm just reading up on history, investigating maps and waiting for spring :) Gonna hit the beach one of these days tho, just to shake off the worst detecting-abstinence.

wltdwiz: I notice you run with both the F75 and the F2. Would you reccomend the F2 for my girlfriend? Most of the targets around here is around 3-5". she has been with me from the start, but it's boring having to share 1 detector. ... or should i just buy the XP Deus and give her the F5? :p

Oh, no, don't buy the XP Deus! (Of course I have to say that, since this is a Fisher forum.)

Welcome to the forum, Stefan!

The F2 is a good beginner machine, but better suited to USA coinshooting than to European relic hunting. In the lower price ranges (but higher than the F2) you might consider the Bounty Hunter Platinum, which however I don't know if it's available in Europe.

Our GB/G2 (Fisher/Teknetics) platform was designed specifically with Europe in mind, are very good relic hunting machines (esp. in areas with a lot of iron trash), and easy for a beginner to learn (even easier than the F5). But they're not priced down there with the F2 and Platinum.

The Fisher F75 and Tek T2 are closely related high-performance machines. Between the two, the Tek costs a little less, has fewer features aimed at USA coinshooting, and is generally regarded as being a little better suited to European relic hunting. You'd want the SE version. These machines have a racehorse personality and are not generally regarded as good beginner machines, although easy to learn if you have an experienced user to show you how. With your experience on the F5 you'd get the T2 figured out fairly quickly.

You say most of the targets are in the 3 to 5 inch range. If these are valley bottom soils, there are probably targets a lot deeper and you're missing them due to searching in discrimination mode. If however you search in all metals mode you should be finding targets a lot deeper if the targets are there. So-- if you search a lot in all metals mode and are not finding deeper targets, the targets probably really are mostly shallow, and your next metal detector doesn't have to be a depth monster, it needs to have excellent target separation and to be easy to use. The F5 is already pretty good at both things.

When I was a teenager back in the early 60's I became interested in Scandinavia. (A couple of my dad's friends were Norwegian and Swedish respectively, and one year we had a Swedish exchange student at our high school, smart and gorgeous whom I drooled over. So even living in California, the Northlands didn't seem entirely foreign to me.) This was of course long before the Internet and whatever I could find to read was by chance in used book stores and a loaner or two from my dad's Norwegian friend. (Not much to be had from my dad's bachelor Norwegian friend, his reading material was 99% of the pictorial kind which my dad wouldn't allow me to borrow.)

One story I read in Norwegian (which however I suspect originated in Varmeland or Danmark) was that of a duck hunter who always came back with about a dozen ducks. No gunshot damage. His friends wondered what the heck was going on, but the guy was very secretive. One day over too many cups of ale he described his method to a buddy. He'd go out to a shallow lake with a wet suit and snorkel, and a belt around his waist with lots of fasteners. He'd walk along the bottom of the lake, slowly approach those two feet dabbling below the surface, and in one swift movement snatch them, jerk the duck down, wring its neck, and pop its neck into a fastener on his belt. All very systematic and methodical.

And that's why, whenever I read about the Ankor Wat temple in Cambodia, the first picture that comes to mind is not ancient tropical architecture, but those ducks.

i have the f2 in case my girlfriend ever gets the bug (shes into rock hunting) but the f2 is not the deepest, but your girlfriend would probly be better served with a GB/G2 or mabie a f 70 as they are ez to use / light / & you can get some very good depth on your targets.. & it wount break the bank
good luck whatever you deside.
love my f75 :detecting:
