<img src="/metal/html/sad.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":sad"> I been trying to get some responses from Lawmakers and offices concerning metal detecting. This morning I had short meeting with a Ass. City Attorney and Super. of Parks in my area. I am just starting on this and these men are old friends of mine so it will not gather attention by my interest.
Their complaints are (don't shoot the messenger)1. People are converging on parks in broad day light and digging holes for everyone to see..right in middle of soccer fields and play areas. A foot deep! WHAT IF EVERYONE CAME TO THE PARKS WITH SHOVELS AND DUG FREAKING HOLES! (Don't try night time)
2. Detector people look like homeless people in parks and public areas they scare others when they walk around with hunting knives showing.
3. Sneaking on private property with picks and shovels and then get mouthy with landowners.
4. Sneaking on or EVEN AROUND historical sites cause complaints that the detectorists are damaging property or will...so NIP IT IN THE BUD NOW!
5. 2 Detectorists arrested recently for digging holes in FAIRWAY OF LOCAL GOLF COURSE! (Go figure)
6. These carry cases look like Rifle Carry cases...people see these guys get out with them and .."old lady with binoculars across street" calls police on men with guns! Black detectors look like guns from a distance! ( Yea right).
7. Then long lecture on damage to hiking areas/paths camping areas and "What if everyone had DETECTORS!" etc etc etc etc etc.
What surprised me is these guys were very well informed...they are putting things together and coming up with precise arguments of substance. Just some info but I can see that we all must think about who is watching us...anticipate any little old lady, mother with stroller, self appointed citizen protector of historical area. As far as my detecting.....I have got to sit down and make a plan...no one is going to call in complaint on me. Then we have to change perceptions concerning Detectorists...I got lots of ideas. Take care all. Joe

if you see someone doing things they should not be doing on public property - educate them. If there's nothing but bone between their ears and they just won't listen - call the police/rangers and report them yourself.
if we don't help police the hobby - don't worry new laws will... IMO
