notching feature on the Omega

I have been using the Omega now for about a month, and I really enjoy this detector. I have found numerous coins, some silver and various relics. That being said I have some questions on "notching". This is my first detector with that feature.
1. What is the difference between notching and disc.?
2. Do you lose depth and/or sensitivity with notching?
3. I hunt some areas where older coins are located, but as usual, they can be masked, especially by iron. If I use the iron notch, will that help or hurt in that situation?
4. What hunting situations would you use the notching feature?
I certainly appreciate your knowledge and comments. Txquest

Say you only wanted to detect coins. If you set the discrimination up under nickel then you will detect the nickel but also everything above nickel, including pull tabs. However, if you also set the notch to eliminate pull tabs, then you would detect nickels, skip pull tabs and detect zinc cents and the rest of the U.S. coins. Only use discrimination on iron. Any increased discrimination used will help mask a target. I have read that notching reduces depth along with increased discrimination but not as much with the newer machines.

Hope this info will help.
