Nothing from America in America

I had an interesting morning today in Virginia.

Drove out to the sticks to hunt a country park. Old farm land turned into a play ground, soccer fields and wood trails.

I found 14 ounces of lead sinkers made in china with no water in site, one 1954 Japanese yen coin, and one 1977 Bermuda hog one cent.

Definitely not what I expected driving out to the country.

Very bizarre. I had to take a 30 minute Goggle class on reading Japanese dates to figure out it was from 1954. It's actually pretty cool how the coin date is determined. The first two characters is the era or "nengo" which in this case is "Shoma" and the last character is the symbol for year. The three characters in the middle are 5 10 4. You multiple the first two and then add the last which is 54. Since the Shoma era is from 1926 to 1989 I can tell this coin was from 1954.

Unfortunately it takes about 85 yen to make a US dollar as it is made out of pure aluminum.
