Maybe I've missed something here but I haven't seen anyone suggest that this guy may have received a defective detector right out of the box. I also agree with the others who have suggested that he needed to put some time into using it. It easily took me nearly two months to feel fairly confident with my 705. After reading these forums and seeing how well people do with Minelab products, I would have returned it for a replacement unit. Seems like he had it much less time than most company's 30 day return policy.
I am relatively new to detecting and took my 705 out of the box on 5-14-2010. This past Friday, 12-03-2010 at the end of a day of detecting, I'm up to 1336 coins in just under 7 months. I also have a decent amount of relics although I consider myself mostly a coin shooter.
This is pretty much my first detector. I originally bought a used Tesoro Cortez for $50 off of my neighbor and it sat in the cupboard for 3 years. I finally decided to use it. I used the Tesoro two times, realized that I liked detecting and decided to buy something more modern that had an LCD display. I sold the Tesoro for nearly 3 times what I paid for it and put the money towards the 705 and felt it was a a great choice. It easily takes a few months to get used to these detectors and nothing can replace the time that you'll put into learning it for the results that you will eventually have. It's all about ground balance, noise cancellation, detecting location and of course a little bit of luck.
This guy had to do what makes him happy The principal of how a detector works is very similar between detectors so if the issue that he was seeing was ground related then he would have the same problem with nearly any detector that he would buy. Although he didn't say what he traded it in on, if what he bought is working well for him then my bet is on he had a bad 305. The important thing is that he's happy with whatever he buys.
Hopefully anyone considering buying a Minelab won't be discouraged by this guy's experience. Personally, I would have handled this a little differently but hey, that's what's great about having our own individual rights as a consumer. After all, I bought a 705 after seeing the video of the guys throwing a Minelab one into a lake.
