Nukbers Sum

An Excal would be great (I bought a CZ-20... while it's a very good machine, I should have gotten the Excal) but in the meantime, the Exp is really good at the beach. Obviously you can't dunk it but you can use it in the wet sand or very shallow surf. I use a "swingy thingy" at the beach so I don't accidentally drop it. The only thing I did aside from sealing the coil cover was putting some silicone in the rod near the coil. If you lift the coil too high, water can run up the rod and into the control box. Not good...

If you hit the beach 2 hours or so before dead low (watch for negative, or very low tides) you'll have plenty of real estate to hunt without having to worry about being in the water. You can run the machine with no, or very little, discrimination. You just need a real good, large scoop. RTG has some really good ones. I use a monster scoop.

Joe,
I don't trust myself to carry the Explorer to the beach.. I plan to carry the detector on the boat.. the anchor out.. where ever and
wade in... and.. the first thing I would probably do is fall in with the detector or drop or.. or something like that.. so.. I hope to wait things out.. to find a good Excalibur at a good price.. I'm having to be patient.. sometimes I think.. just bite the bullet.. pay the price for a new one and be done with it.. but those things are pricey?!?!
Then I think.. if I will probably get to the point that I want a water detector that I could submerse... and I want to be in the position to use it underwater.. if that situation comes up..

I kind of imagine going out to one of the islands around here.. anchor.. wade in to the shore.. maybe picnic and detect.. or..
maybe fish in between.. ahhh.. can't wait for retirement.. just
hope I can afford to do all these "fun" sounding things then...

Thanks for the info.. I'm use to watching tides for the fishing.. and I will go check out the scoops.. maybe I will get a monster scoop (I have a couple of small ones that I talked a dealer into throwing in 6-7 years ago... when I was using the XLT)... if I get the monster scoop.. then I HAVE to get the EXCAL... right?!

Dan

Yes, that's good rational... buy a good water scoop and you have to buy an Excal . Works for me  I envy you and your retiring (I've got 12 years :( ). Time to fish and MD whenever you want? Now THAT sounds great! Get an Excal, a WOT and some snorkling gear and you'll be set.
