O K time for my dumb question

Sterling and 925 are the same. That is 92.5% silver. .825 would be 82.5% silver. Us coins are .900 fine or 90% silver. 900 fine silver is frequently called coin silver. You sometimes see jewelry or flatware labeled as coin silver.

They're basically the same. 925 is 92.5% silver or 925 thousandths silver mixed with 7.5% base metal for hardness..

Its not a dumb question. There are several grades of silver, one of which is not silver at all. Few people know much about this stuff, so you asked in the right place.

There is also nickel silver which you don't see much of these days. I have an old belt buckle made of such with a silver dollar in the center.

Thats the "non silver" I was referring to. It is an amalgam of nickel, tin and copper and has no silver in it at all. Think trumpet mouth piece and you have the idea. In the really old days it was called Argentium.
