Hmmm jbow, I have been using the 11"DD coil about 90% of the time, so I love that one for its wider "field of view" and I honestly think that it is easier to pinpoint. But then again, I haven't really practiced much with the standard 10" coil. One thing to remember, that between the 2, the VDI numbers are different for each.
Then again, I was relic hunting all day yesterday, and think that my 10" coil might be acting up. I don't know if it was the machine, the coil, or the ground conditions (newly planted field with fertilizer in it), but in order to find my goodies yesterday, alot of things were ringing up as IRON, and I had to go MUCH SLOWER than I was used to. I might need to send it in so 1st Texas can check it out.
Jbow, personally for me i like the std 10inch eliptical coil the best.I think it discriminates better and for me it just works better.I do like the 11 inch dd and i have spent some time using it because of all the praise it gets from people on here but its hard to beat that std coil, i suggest you use them both give the std coil a week or so then try the 11 inch dd for a week and compare for your self. They both have their own pros and cons but for me the over all performance of the std coil on the Omega hits home all the time.First Texas did their home work on this one and put the right coil on it and gave us the ability to use a larger dd coil and the smaller 5 inch dd which is also fun to use.Enjoy the Omega, it has been a blast for me....Markmac
My hunting partner has one and he likes the 10". He has a minnie that has been buried in his backyard for 20+ years and says that the O8K will hit it with the 10" coil and seperates really well on a nickel he has with trash... I am going to use it today.
I was just wondering what others were experiencing and I really think that one reason a lot of people like the 11" better is because someone said it was better and some just haven't given the 10" as much of a chance. I am guilty of the same sort of thing, I do it all the time if i'm not careful... I let myself become prejudiced by the opinions of others then I already have an opinion before I do my own testing and I am perfectly capable of seeing what I want to see. I am trying to not do that with this machine.
I did some inside testing earlier when it was raining and I really like the TID response most minnies hit in the 70s, mostly 73-75. Smaller solid base carbine bullets read about 10 numbers lower, around 65. I checked a lot of relics. I didn't make a list yet (but I will with both coils) and I found that almost everything I tested fell in the 60sand 70s. Bronze pennies, dimes, quarters in the 80s. Clad quarter 88, silver 90. Hlaf dollar IIRC was 93, Morgan dollar 95.. two dlooars stacked 97, three stacked 99, 4 and 5 read 99 too. I did the same test with both the T2 and F75 LTD since I had them right there and the F had the same results. The T2 failed, at three it became a broken signal in the high 30s, 4 and 5 stacked became very broken with an unstable number in the low 30s. Most detectors will fail this test. You can try it with yours, just start stacking silver dollars and you'll see. The Tejon reads them correctly, the Minelabs fail miserably. Other coins stacked will also change the response. nickels will raise the number with every nickel added to the stack. I haven't tried it with silver quarters but I need to. I have a roll of 40 that aren't rolled but in an invelope, they are all silver. I'll test them as if a cache...
Julien(jbow) I didn't know that! WILD stuff. You would think that all detectors would recognize more than one coin at a time when combined. Again, very interesting!
I find I get better depth with the 11 on coins. It also seperates targets surprisingly well. But in multiple target areas, the 5" wins out.
I scanned a 10 x 30 area with the 11 coil, found a bunch of clad, then put on the 5 coil, and pulled another 15 coins out of the same patch.
The area was a medium trashy area. Don't forget to crank up the sensetivity to as close to max as possible!
