Oakland County, Michigan beach hunters wanted.

I am opening up applications for volunteers for the Oakland County Parks for beach cleaning and swim areas. We are low on members of the Search & Recovery Team.

These volunteers are the only ones able to use metal detectors in the swim areas due to fabric under the sand. Because of the fabric only special scoops are allowed. Basically they have a flat front and a screen for sifting the sand instead of digging into it. The item remains in the scoop which works like a French Fry basket on a pole. You don't push it in the sand with your foot but pull it toward you. Easier to do than tell you how easy this works.

The Search & Recovery Team's main purpose is to keep the swim area clean of any metal objects that could hurt a guest or just be unsightly. Items like chicken bones, band-aids, paper cups, gum, kids toys, goggles, fish hooks, knives and anything else including coins and jewelry. Items of value are recorded for return to the person that lost it if they report it missing. After 120 days ownership goes to the finder. You retain the item till someone comes forward. You'd be surprised what is never claimed. We are also on call to hunt the dry ground if something is lost like keys, rings, you name it. One of the main things we have to find every year is volley ball stakes in the corners.

Anyone wanting to get in on this should contact the Oakland County Parks Volunteer Office for details.
