Swimmer hurt at Rehoboth Beach
By Associated Press

Heavy surf that left a man seriously injured has prompted officials to restrict swimming areas along Rehoboth Beach.

The beach patrol limited swimming to areas close to lifeguard posts Friday morning after heavy surf knocked a man face down into the sand, leaving him with neck, back and abdominal injuries.

The man was stabilized by emergency responders and airlifted to Christiana Hospital in Newark.

Officials said lifeguards were setting up their equipment but had not taken their posts when the man was injured.
Beach patrol captain Kent Buckson described the surf as moderately heavy Friday but said it will get worse this weekend as Hurricane Bill skirts the Atlantic Coast.

Buckson did not rule out possible beach closures over the weekend

I'm staying near the end of the boardwalk. I'll have to come down your way. How late are you allowed out
on the beach?
