For those that are interested; the Australian Navy conducted the funeral of Claude Choules today. Claude was the very last living veteran of World War 1, of any side. He served in the British Navy in WWI and in the Australian Navy during the second world war. He lived in Perth (Western Australia) and was 110 when he passed away.
It's sad to lose living history like that, but time catches up with all of us eventually.

When you stop to think about the history that man saw unfold. Incredible.

From steam power to nuclear power. From riding horseback to rocketing to the moon.

I wonder if over the course of our lives we will see the same level of advances he did.
 
Yeah. The story about his death did specify, that he was the last serviceman that saw active duty, which would explain why the preface was put into the story.
