Hi Everyone,
A neighbor has been intrigued with my detecting and gave me permission to hunt her yard. Her house was built in 1920. I was all over it!! At first I was finding a lot of memorials and then the SR-71 in the pix. Finally a wheat, this gave me some optimism for more. Had a 37-38 signal, thinking another Lincoln I was surprised to find a 1943 Merc. After a couple of more wheats, all about 35-36 I came upon a 14-15-16, I knew it was probably a nickel but was happy to see a silver war nickel emerge. Starting to get dark and I only had my sunglasses with cheaters built in it was getting harder to see what was going on. One more 37-38 at about 5 inches, why not dig it!!! Looked to be a silver dime, too dirty to tell. I put it in my pocket to clean up at home. Boy was I pumped up when I saw the "one dime" on the coin when I pulled it out. This is my 2nd Barber Dime and just so happens to be another 1903. Also found $1.16 in clad.
Great way to start the new year!!!
Good hunting everyone and thanks for looking!

Good job there. That's better than some parks can be. It might be worth going over again with a smaller coil depending on how junky the soil was? You could see if any of her next door neighbors would also let you hunt their yards, especially if they can see you left her yard in good shape.

Thanks SS, already lined up another one while I was out there. Will definitely hit it again!
To Minelabgeek...Thanks and welcome aboard! Are you using a Safari?

Bunky -Sweet finds indeed. Ironic how that makes two 1903 barbers for you ! Once you start gaining permission to hunt private yards it's amazing how quickly other neighbors will grant it ( I'm sure that you're a great ambassador for this terrific hobby ) Congrats, again.

great job with the hunt It's stories like these that keep me excited all through winter. This year I hope to find some barber dimes or quarters.Haven't found any yet. Thanks for sharing storie and pics.

Thanks kschae4 and Dave400, I did get permission to hunt a few more yards yesterday and today. So I will keep you updated if I come up with anything good. Hit one yard yesterday and zilch! But that's the way it goes. Dave400, where are you located that you stop for the winter?
Hope the global warming kicks in soon so you can get out!!!!

Nice start to the year Bunker!

In hold here waiting for the Winter to end. Ground like concrete, need explosives to go more than 4 inches deep.

Thanks Tom, where are you located? Hope it warms up for you soon! I guess it is research time.

Bunker,

I live right outside the Gettysburg 1st Day battlefield in a small town (population less than 900) nestled in the center of 17,000 acres of orchards. On the lower slope of the South Mountain range, about 6 miles from the center of town.

The problem is, most areas around here have been vacuumed since the late 50's with everything from Metrotechs to GPX 4500s so there isn't much left less than 10 inches down. Also, there have been so many nasty relic hunters around that the locals are a lot less willing to give permission so places to hunt are getting fewer each year.

I do a bit of digging in Maryland as well (I'm 12 miles from the Mason Dixon), mostly G'Burg and Antietam/Sharpsburg campaign sites and some of the Potomac Crossings around White's Ferry. Again, these fields have been scoured since the shooting stopped and the honey holes are few and far between.

A couple of times a year I get down to Ole Virginny for some diging time. A bud lives on a massive farm that had CS cav presence (Mosby) as well as both CS and US infantry passing through at various times. Plus I like to attend the invitational digs down in Culpeper and now Orange counties. I am signed up for a hunt in March that puts 150 of us on what is expected to be a target rich 600 acres with CS campsites and Federal involvement. Three days of digging in some of the prettiest country in VA and hanging around the hotel with a bunch of other dirt fishermen, including some of the guys that are considered East Coast legends. Well worth the price of admission.

Later,
TomH

Thanks for the info. Too bad about the knuckleheads that ruin it for the rest of us. Sounds like you should have a great time on the March hunt. Let us know how it goes!
