I am down, working on the Texas Border right now, in injun country. Where I am is the number one drug corridor into America. I am working for the Great State of Texas, opposite Fema, handling grants to Cities and Counties. My work has placed me kicking sand into the Rio Grande River several times so far.
I have a CHL in Texas, and usually carry an Aerotek modded Glock Model 17, and a Colt Mustang .380 as backup. I have not had an issue yet, though things are really far worse than the media has suggested down here, just across the border. At my hotel, 50%+ of the residents are military, patrolling our borders.
The primary issues I face, in terms of physical safety, are bad guys from the cartels, and gang bangers. I also potentially face Rattlesnakes, and rabid coyotes or bobcats, skunks, etc. Maybe even a feral hog or two.
When I am out detecting, I have quit wearing my headphones down here, because it is just too simple to not hear someone come up.
So to the point, and my recommendation:
I have just bought a .45 colt/.410 derringer from Bond Arms out of Waco Texas ( http://bondarms.com/ ). I got mine from Academy in McAllen, so all of those should carry it. I bought the Snake Slayer with a 3-1/2 inch barrel. For those of you that are able to carry a weapon, I will tell you that this is a really well made weapon. It is large enough for a three finger hold on the handle, and the muzzle flip is manageable with .45 or .410 shells. I am currently carrying 3 inch .410 buck shot .000. At 15 feet, it is deadly, and for where I am at, it is appropriate.
I paid $429 for this derringer, but as I told my wife, I feel safer. I used it already to dispatch a 5 foot rattlesnake (the photo, as held by a local fellow). the skin is currently being made into a belt for my son, and I have the rattles as well (11 buttons).
Anyway, I have actually started carrying mainly my Glock and the derringer when out. Lord knows I wouldn't want to use them, but as the old saying goes, better tried by 12, than carried by 6........
So, if you are able, and want a fine, fine gun, consider looking at this derringer. Also, while at the site, look at the videos that show results and patterns of it. Carrying a shotgun cartridge while detecting is not a bad thing in my book, regardless of where I am at.
