Off Topic. Yankees & Confederates

New member
Could someone tell this old Aussie what the difference between the Yankees & the Confederates was during that great war?
Was it a war between English and Irish or Catholic and Christian or was it a political difference of opinion between States? What triggered that war?

Cheers:ausflag:

Yes we did have History books and we studied world history, unlike Americans who learnt only about America. The American conflicts did not rate very highly and were just touched on lightly.

So there ya go: one mob wanted to be able to continue slavery and the other mob said they couldn't, so they shot the crap out of each other over it.

Hi Fishers Ghost,
Most people would want you to believe that the civil war was only about slavery including the writers at wikipedia.
Slavery was only a small issue but not the main issue. The main issue was state rights. The federal gubment was trying to influence their politics
on the states--much like they are doing today. So there in lies the main reason for secession of the southern states. The feds were pushing there
agenda on the states. Each state has their rights and can choose how they proceed with things. These rights are guaranteed to the states by the
constitution and by the way each state has their own constitution. Should a state not wish to participate in the federal agenda they have the right to
persue their own, An example of this today would be Obamacare. Some states do not agree with it and have passed their own issues.
Just thought I would set the record straight.

Kind of a broad assumption although I can see why you might think that.. Many of us actually did study a considerable amount of world history. The current generation, however, does concern me....

Sailorman.

This generation in Australia have not the slightest clue about our early pionees and settlers.
By the time they leave primary school (Yr 6) they have been taught nothing and cannot name a single explorer of any kind and know nothing of our gold field and other mining development let alone the conditions that our forfathers had to endure in opening up this country.
Todays young generation feel put to the test if their bloody I-Pod stuffs up or their big flat screen tv conks out
They are the first of the truely dumbed down generations.
