I was going through my Barber dimes I have found and didn't even realize I had this one with the "O" mint mark.
Ok, lets here it. What grade and value would you give this 1900 O mint mark Barber dime.

Here is my humble opinion... If you go by the red book (2005) It would grade about a VF20 for a value of $125. But it does have some marks on the face and has been in the dirt soooo. I would say, worth about $80.00. What you guys think?

I say about $50.00 if you get the dirt out with a ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. Scratches are in a bad area..........but the Barber could have cut his face while shaving !!!!

LMAO
Buzz you're so funny.
They didn't have Norelco then!
Jim your Barber looks great to me.

I am usually very critical on coin grading and besides the scratch on the cheek, I would say VG 20. The back really seals the deal for me. The coin, being one of the keydates in the series, will probably be valued a grade lower because of the damage but I don't think that it really detracts from the piece. If I didn't have one and needed it to fill a hole, I would think that 70 or 80 dollars would be fair. Slight damage on rare coins won't devalue it as much as the common coins, but that depends if I am selling or buying. Great coin anyway. therick

I recently finished an ANA grading class and the first thing I'd say is that you can't really grade a coin from a picture as there are some details you need to look at close up (with some magnification) and by rotating the coin, having the right kind of lighting, etc. In fact there was an exam question just about this very thing.

However, using the overall impression I get from the photo I would give it a technical grade of VF-20 Obverse scratches and a market grade of F-15

However, it is likely that you left some hairline scratches on it when you cleaned it even if you just ran water on it and gently rubbed it between your fingers or gave it a washing soda/hot water bath.

My guess is that if you sent it into ANACS or some other grading service that would grade it they would see the hairline scratches and give it a net grade of something like:

NET F-12 CLEANED Very Fine Details or perhaps NET F-12 ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE Very Fine Details (as they so often do with dug coins)

But you could probably sell it on EBay ungraded as VF-20 and get VF or close to it money for it if you wanted to. This ebay auction might be of interest to watch though - 8316184214

I'll put her up on e-bay and see what I can get out of her. I'll put the link on here when I do, just so all can see what it will go for. Ya never know on e-bay plus the summer is not the best time to sell on e-bay. Winter when everyone is home would be the best time I believe. I might start it tomorrow.
Thanks Steve for the informative post. Cool stuff. Jim
