Ok what does everyone REALLY THINK about the "Diggers" show that was on NatGeo a few weeks ago??

I will refrain from commenting on it at this point...but am VERY curious as to what all you fellow explorer users TRULY felt about it....AND the end result of how you felt it made the hobby look.
 
I posted this on the Garrett forum previously since they seemed to be "showcasing" Garrett products.

I just watched the two episodes of Diggers and I must say it exceeded my expectations...it was worse than I thought it could be. Now I hope we all have fun while we detect, I know I do but to have our hobby represented by a couple of guys who humor is slightly less than a fart joke makes me shudder. I understand it is all a put on, exaggerations for effect. Just like so many of these "reality" shows they have nothing to do with the truth. We all saw their techniques and heard all the "cute and cloying" nicknames for their finds enough to make anyone with a modicum of experience feel a bit queasy. Have you noticed everything has to be a "contest" now, cooking shows, storage wars, clothes designing, and even the Trump saying "Your Fired." The real gist of so many of these shows is that anyone watches can say "At least I'm not that stupid!" Now I don't think that this show will have a real negative impact on the hobby, I don't think it will last and I don't think it will be watched by many people. It is just the attitude that everything has to be "juiced" up to use their vernacular makes me understand the wisdom of the iconoclastic newspaper man H. L. Mencken when he said "No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public." Now this is another of my avocations that is getting trashed by entertainment media, as a Master level Chessplayer I always paid attention to how Chess and Chessplayers are portrayed in the media, generally it was two ways either as some brainy champion, who was playing absurd moves with the pieces incorrectly set up, or as some nerdish twit who seems social inept and barely above a hyena in manners. I do not know which is worse being portrayed in such a manner or as in this Diggers show as buffoons.

I am not casting aspersions on the detectorist, I am sure they are being paid a goodly sum to play their japeish roles no more or no less than any other actor. Andy Warhol may have been quite right that everyone has their 15 minutes of fame, I sincerly hope that is all that is coming for this show.
 
I thought that their antics were truly ridiculous. And I see nothing good for our hobby coming from it. There is already some backlash happening from the other show "American Diggers" ..

I have done my fair share of ranting on the subject, and I think I am done. Just hope things turn out for the best ..
 
The show was silly, did nothing to enhance the Hobby of Metal Detecting.

.................... In fact I think it set the hobby back in the eyes of the public making people think we are all irresponsible, immature fools.
 
I was NOT impressed with the show in the slightest. I hope they enjoy
their 15 minutes of fame....'cus a lot of people were disappointed and
turned the channel to Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.....

The show is an affront to all my senses, and it will only damage our hobby by enticing idiots to start detecting, resulting in ruining the good image us respectable hunters try to maintain.
 
Bryce didn't we run into these two or three fags at your park a couple years ago where they just dug everything and left holes all over Hells half-acre. It's people like this that makes it bad for all of us if we ever get lucky enough to find the occasional key Coin we usually keep it, these rats are out digging with backhoes at historical sites and people's backyards and taken it to their nearest antique store or pawn shops and selling it to the highest bidder. I hope they cancel both of the shows and as far as I'm concerned they can take a couple of tokes and put them over their eyes and then shoot them with a few rounds if you get my drift.:ranting: If you take your silver and copper's two town and sell it for profit to pay for your detector and accessories no one's got a problem with that but these two shows did a lot more harm than good and I hope they cancel them both. They didn't even take the time to show the people how to dig a proper plug to retrieve their coins or replace their plugs so it leaves no big holes. The only good thing about this show is all the people on this form no better than to act like this when gaining permission to hunt a new site and use a little respect, it only takes a few people or shows like this to run it for all of us. So please fill in your holes and use your brains thanks for listening... THE YETI:surprised:
 
Seems the biggest contraversy comes from them putting a price on everything they dig. I mean that and they are just plain stupid for the TV ratings. The Arks tick me off as much as these guys. Id love to have seen someone do a realistic show that didnt have to be just another realality show that got negitive results. I find it discusting that we are considered looters. Who they kidding..... they wont hesitate to steal your property if they think something of historic value is there. Im all for perserving history but if it werent for us they wouldnt have access to half the stuff they find. To me they are just trying to justify their next grant. Since ive started water hunting i have noticed a difference. Rarely did i sell a coin or relic even thou i had a pretty good idea of the price. No one thinks twice about jewerly or items found on the beach being sold. We all discuse melt values.

Pure showbiz...These two guys dont look very professional. Another reality show where items of value are found in the ground, in a storage
locker, in the Berring Sea, in a pawn shop and so on...
Guys here post better videos.
 
I can't think of a single thing positive that this show has brought to the hobby. But, after reading comments on the various forums ... there sure are a lot of negatives. My advise to Nat Geo is to excavate a really deep hole in the middle of their cutting room floor and plant "Diggers" in the bottom of it.

Im a bit surprised the National Geo would put that on unless they are attempting to put us in the lime lite in a negitive way. I hope Garrett isnt backing that..... but then stupid sells.

I don't think the two guys in the show are a good representation of most of the detectorist community. They are a couple of knuckleheads that belong in a Three Stooges remake. The show makes it look like all recoveries are valuable and we all know that we find much more trash than treasure. The values they put on items are extremely inflated. I'm afraid some people are going to think that there is a fortune to be made detecting and not care about the ethics that most of us try to follows so the hobby can continue for our children/grandchildren. Two thumbs down!
 
I enjoyed watching the show and will watch again when future episodes show, yes I am biased. I personally know these guys and have hunted with them on several occasions. I can tell you with certainty, there was no hype for the camera. These guys have a level of enthusiasm for detecting and history that is unparallelled. I am sure all holes were filled, but wouldn't that make for boring TV? All hunting was done on private land with landowner permission. I really don't see any problem with valuing finds (although they did seem inflated), many sell finds and are never chastized the way that these guys have been. Last year I sold enough of my finds to upgrade to a Minelab Explorer SE Pro, was it bad of me to focus on $$$ to be able to upgrade? Are they a couple of guys having fun with their hobby...yes. Some silly names for finds...probably. Seriously worried about a rash of uneducated detectorists ruining a hobby...seems unlikely.

A definite black eye for the hobby but this too shall pass.. These guys will be old new and long forgotten before you know it. Working in the railroad industry, this is comparable to when the movie "Unstoppable" came out. Yes, it was very loosely based on an actual occurrence but still was made scary enough to bring unnecessary attention and pressure from the public and the feds.

Maybe NatGeo could give it another shot, drawing from a much wider gene pool, and try portraying a more postitive image on the hobby as a whole. JJ
 
These type of shows may make it harder to get permission to hunt properties. Also it will likely bring in more hunters and most likely more problems trying to find places to hunt.:shrug:
 
Well since 1976 all I have been hearing is on how metal detecting hobby is doomed will not make it another day.Just like progressive left always telling you are going to lose something so they can pass another stupid law.Well I am still hunting, in spite of metal detecting shows that maybe not the best but still entertaining.I find it amusing that some metal detector clubs did not make it as long as the hobby itself since it was doomed any minute telling you this is how it should be done or we all will never be able to hunt again,I fear large metal detector groups,clubs,etc that want to talk for me and set guidelines for the rest of us(No shovels) the silent majority.As for rest of you Chicken Littles it is a TV show get over it.Man do you see all that good stuff they throw out on Hoarders Show. I wonder if they have hoarders code of ethics.
 
Don't know the program but we get the same thing over here from the BBC. Instead of concentrating on the topic of the program they try and make it interesting to a larger audience and fail miserably and it is then of interest to nobody.
 
For one thing they dug some NASTY looking holes. If you are going to be on camera don't you think you'd take even extra care to dig a nice round clean plug, put the dirt on a towel, etc? I'm not saying I dig the best looking plugs all the time but I'm not on camera, and I do my best to make the spot look undug when I'm done. They might be doing the same thing (repairing the hole really well) but they aren't showing that on camera, and as said impressions of how the hole looks being dug is what sticks in the public's mind. If you are on camera like that you need to dig a nice, neat, round, plug. I don't care how well the repair looks (since they aren't showing that), you need to present your best foot forward when you're on a TV show. Kind'a like not picking your nose in front of company. Use some common sense. I saw none on this show. I keep my back to the public when digging holes just because I don't want them to see the act of doing that. The hole might not look the best, but once it's repaired I'm confident they can come over and have trouble finding it.

Second, these guys act like a couple of two year olds running around with too much sugar in their systems.

Third, what's with the slang terms? They made it sound like this is lingo used among the detecting crowd. Never heard the terms they were using among my circle of hunters.

Fourth, too much emphasis on the money involved. They should have dwelled on history more than what things are worth. Look at that great show Pawn Stars. The reason why it has such a following is because the HISTORY of the items is what makes it interesting, not how much the item is worth. The price is secondary to the show. If they'd start dwelling on the history of the area and items found then you'd be learning something. That would be a start.
