Old copper coin found in field with CTX help id'ing it?

This copper coin is in bad shape. You can barely make out the bust and chin facing right. Slightly larger diameter than quarter. Slightly thinner than a quarter. Found it yesterday with ctx in old New England field. Any thoughts? Can't seem to match it with any old cents I know of. Obverse is worn off. Us CTX guys are pretty smart. Thought someone may know what it is. Thanks.

I'm thinking it may be a King George Copper circa late 1700's. These were quite common in the Colonies before and after the war. I'm going by the profile with the double chin. see photo below.

Sounds like you are on a good location I'm sure you will find many more.

^ I agree

Based on the neckline the closest matches I can find are for king george iii halfpennies circa late 1700's. Take a picture of both sides with a flashlight on an angle to get more detail

Great find! I was treated to 10 coppers my first weekend of detecting this year. They were George III from 1773 to 1775 and Auctori Connect 1787s. My oldest coins yet.

wow duke that is an amazing hunt

Yes, it was. I was very happy. I also found 4 half cents. 3 Draped bust and 1 classic head. That was before I traded my E-trac in for the CTX. Now I'm finding memorial cents and Jefferson nickels. LOL! To be fair, I have been hunting very trashy, heavily detected sites to see if the CTX would pull anything the E-trac missed. I have been to any old sites yet. Just got the machine on Saturday in the mail. I hope I'm not sorry!!!!

To a point JD, but that neckline is definitely not the same. The front of the chest on your drops off almost to the edge of your coin as compared to the kg iii coin pic posted which descends and starts going back long before the edge. Besides that the bottom of the bust on yours appears to go practically straight from the front to the back. In the pic of the kg iii the bottom of the bust is practically s shaped. You may say that the wear around the edges is the cause, but that would have to be a heck of alot of wear, just look at the distance from the edge of the coin to the top of the head. On both yours and the known kg iii the distance is the same

Good points. I have to look at this more closely. I swear one of the funnest parts of this hobby sometimes is trying to figure out what you dug up. I will figure this out. I think Atlas got me on the right track. Thanks for all the input.

Confirmed as 1770-1775 George iii. I found a pic of the back of a george iii and was able to recognize the patterns on my coin of the lady on the back and the shield to the lower right of lady. barely recognizable unless you already know what the pattern is from a good pic of the coin. I would have posted the back before but you can't really see anything in a pic of my coin. Flashlight from the side helped. I think the wear is slightly distorting appearances on the front which is why it does not appear to match exactly. Thanks for the help. Enjoyed researching it.

Closer match is this KGIII.

Good brain storming session everyone. I'm no expert on coppers but thought it was a KG "something".

I agree with GKMan on the neckline proportions I was concerned about that too.

I think Neil in WJ's photo is a much better match.
