Old Goldquest

Hi J.
upgrade the battery pack to the newer AA 2300 mAh batteries and to try and build an odd (15 volt) charger?
When I spoke with you I mentioned that the current Goldquest uses AA batteries of 12 volt total voltage. The current Goldquest SS is not the same as your Goldquest of years back. You would still have to use a 15 volt pack on your unit.
My suggestion was to have a local battery supply house in your area make up a 15 volt pack, and supply a charger for it. As I explained, I thought the expense to you would be less, and it would be quicker.
I did email Eric yesterday on your questions, and I asked about a replacement 15 volt battery pack, and a charger.
Have a nice day
Mr. Bill

I guess bill can answer this best, bnot sure what you have, but the Goldquest by Eric Foster comes in a plastic case and the orginal model is only several years old. It has always cost less than $900.00.
Does the literature you have show manufacturers name?
I have never seen or heard of another unit with that name, unless someone has put it on!!! Go to top of this home page and click on Surfscanner.com, that is the dealer for the USA for Eric Foster detectors and you will see what a Goldquest looks like. Call Bill and talk to him to strighten this out and what you have

Hi,
Does your Goldquest have a serial number? I have a record of selling one to Calgold in July 1994. A few were made after that, but all were sold in the UK. The successor to the original Goldquest was the Deepstar.
The name "Goldquest" had not been in use for at least five years and it seemed appropriate to resurrect it for a totally different detector in 2002, namely the Goldquest SS. People were successfully using this detector for nugget hunting as well as beach searching, and a name that was appropriate to both, was needed.
You certainly have not bought a piece of junk. Many of those original Goldquests are still in use, particularly in the UK, although it is primarily a beach detector. One user here has two of them and he wont use anything else. He is going to send me some pictures soon, of all the gold he has found, so keep your eye on this forum for a mouth watering post sometime.
The minimum delay setting was 15us, and with both manual and motion retuning, plus the other facilities, it is still a very good performer in spite of being a bit long in the tooth. Pulse rate was about 1000 pulses per second and the TX pulse 100uS wide.
I'm sure I can find a manual, and I know I have a suitable charger. If the unit has not been used, it may well be that the battery pack is still good. Worth trying charging it up and using a few times, before dipping into the wallet for new cells. I will give Bill Crabtree a price for the charger and manual in the next few days.
The coil is shielded and replacements are still available. Motion mode is SAT, although it is not variable as in later units.
Hope this helps.
Eric.

Eric,
Whew, yes it helps! Thanks for the post. I was relieved to find out you can get me a charger and manual! Also, it was great to hear that this is a good and maybe even a great detector for me. I don

if you are unable to find a charger or elect to build your own battery pack, try looking at the HITEC brand field battery charger. It will charge anything from 4 to 24 cell battery packs and will charge automatically. Cost only 39.99 from hobby people in LA or towerhobbies.com on the net. Requires a 12 volt power supply (5 amps minimum) and connector for your chosen battery pack.
WARNING: from personal experience, take note of the polarity when building your own pack

Hi all, I can certainly vouch for the original Goldquest, it is my best machine, and I also have the Goldquest SS, the SS finds the fine gold rings chains etc, but for really deep thick gold or large copper coins the original Goldquest I find is best. I used to have two of them but I got persuaded to part with one of them to a fellow who was going to Australia to try his hand at nugget searching. So to J.Shaw you have got one of the best ever machine, I have used Eric's machines from the Deepscan, PPDI, Mini-Pulse, Goldscan 2, and some others I cant remember the names of! By the way Eric I have found my first two ring with the GQSS!

Hi Bob,
Well done, finding another two rings. Don't suppose you know Bill Allen from Stainburn in N.Yorks. He has the two GQ's that I mentioned. Just serviced them. He has done very well over the years on the NE coast.
Do you find the probe useful?
Eric.

Hi,
"A bit long in the tooth" is an expression we use in England when something is mature in years. Originally referred to people, or horses, whose gums had receded in old age. Can be applied to anything that is aged.
Eric.

Hi Bob,
I sent a response to your post a few days ago but don’t know what happened to it.
I am glad to meet someone who has an old Goldquest, and that you think it is an excellent machine. You’re building my confidence that I have a great machine here. Hope to find a manual soon, so I can figure how it’s supposed to work best instead of just guessing.

Hi Eric, yes I find the probe is indispensible, I cant see the finds even when they are lying on the ground, but the probe finds them, the only problem I have had with it is the pressbutton sticking "ON" have to keep pressing it to release, by the way is it waterproof?
I have remembered some more PI models that I have possesed, remember these? Eurodec, The Pulsar, Minipulse, Treasure Tec, (minipulse clone) and the Aquapulse that I won in your competition. Happy days.
HH Bob.

Hi Bob,
Would you like to share which probe you find indispensible? I am just starting to research into probes as my next purchase.
Thanks,
Joy Shaw

Eric answered your request for a manual, and a charger. You will need to contact me to complete this request.
My recent emails to you have gone un-answered, and if contact with me doesn't happen, I will assume that you have located a manual, and charger, and I will instruct Eric to hold up shipping the items to my company for distributing.
My direct email is wcrabtre@adelphia.com or phone me at the number you used before.
Thank you
Mr. Bill

Hi Eric
Bob mentioned the response of his old Gold Quest compared to the new SS. I have also noticed the signal strenghs to a pre-decimal pennies is a lot quieter, that I would have expected considering the size of the target. Is this to do with the electronics being targeted towards small gold. If I turn the discriminator from my usual setting of 10us to 15us will it then mimic the louder response of the old Gold quest. This is probably a little simplistic but if you don't ask you don't learn

Mr. Bill,
I sent you a reply back the same day you emailed me! It is in my “sent
