Omega 10" coil malfunction.

A few days back I believe I mentioned that all of a sudden in the middle of a hunt the 10" coil went bonkers and then wouldn't ground grab balance. It would go to 82 when turned on, but would never ground grab balance. I finally got around today to pack it up and send it back, but decided before I called FT to try it one more time. Yes, it g g balanced perfectly. Did the balancing act four or five times and had no problems. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Obviously, I am a little leery since it wouldn't g g balance two days in a row when trying it after it initially wouldn't. I will say that the morning it first happened that everything was really wet and damp. I had had the coil wet before and had no problems, however. I am going to start using the 10" again, so will see. Thanks, HH jim tn
 
Used the 10" coil this morning for four hours and it G B perfectly and had no problems. Hunted in the woods of a big old park and besides 5 wheats and some clad, did dig a U S Military pin. Thought it might be a war nickel at first. It is about the size of a quarter and locked on 57/58. One of the guys I hunted with did recover a nice 1926 S L quarter with a good visible date. To much leaves, brush and grass yet for effective woods hunting. We need a good frost. These woods have been good in the past, but can only be hunted effectively in the winter months after stuff has died off. I really like the 10" coil, but still wonder what caused it to not G B...and now it will. HH jim tn
 
could possibly have an intermittent connection internally!
i would not trust it,and sending it in under warranty, in my view, is the "smart play!"

If it happens again, turn the machine off. With the machine off, press the "ground balance minus button" (the button under the "Ground Grab" button) and turn the machine on while continuing to hold the "minus" button down. The entire LCD will be lit up as long as you keep the "minus" button depressed. When you release the "minus " button, the Omega will beep and turn on. This seems to reset the Omega's processor and electronics (much like rebooting a computer).

I discovered this while hunting one day when I changed my coil from the 10"DD To the 5"DD and the 5"DD would not Ground Grab. It didn't matter where I tried to Ground Grab the 5"DD coil, all it would do is give an overload signal. Even when I pressed the Ground Grab button with the coil in mid air it would overload. Just turning the machine off and on didn't solve the problem. Pressing the other buttons and turning the Omega on didn't fix the problem. It was only solved after I tried the "minus" button. After some experimentation, I discovered the "minus" button is the only button that caused the entire LCD to illuminate and the machine to beep when released.

I have had my Omega for about 7 months and this has only happened once.
The Omega is a GREAT detector and I would recommend it to anyone!!!
 
thanks. If it happens again, I'll give that a try. Your ground grab situation was exactly the same as mine. I've had my Omega for six months and since getting it, it has put my F 75 LTD in the corner a good bit. For pure coin shooting, it is a tough detector to beat. Thanks again for the info. HH jim tn
