Omega 8000 has arrived:smile:

With finally getting some much needed rain here today, I only got in about 20 minutes with the Omega at a nearby school yard this afternoon, but I already know I am going to like it. I only had time to check out one of the three coils, the 10" cencentric, and that coil sure makes for a light weight feeling swing.

Right off, I liked the feel and ease of operation. On shallow targets down to 4," I found the id to be spot on. I dug a couple of everything from tabs up through zincs and quarters. One target, which appeared to be a little bigger then a coin, gave me a bit of a bouncy vid, but was in the coin range, so I dug it. It turned out to be 5 memorial cents, a dime and a nickel, all in the same 4" deep clod.

After pinpointing thousdands of targets with my two F detectors and a T2, it is going to take some getting used to not having the trigger pinpoint feature. I found myself with every target flicking my finger feeling for the trigger.:surprised: I also have to get used to the cable plug being on the inside edge of the screen. On a couple of instances, my right arm got intertwined with the cable. A few hours afield should cure those two situations.

Weather permiting, will get a few hours in with it tomorrow. HH jim tn

I've had my Omega since friday. Its definitely a beast of a machine. Try the 11"DD coil, that thing is deep and clear. I've already been picking multiple wheats out of parks that I've had nothing old out of previously.

As with any make or model detector you have top spend enough time to get a good 'feel' for the best and most efficient sweep speed for the environment, and this applies with the Omega. The advantage you have is the experience with the 'F' and T[sup]2[/sup] models. That in mind, I will say that I really like my T[sup]2[/sup], but prefer it over the Omega for certain iron infested sites and where TID isn't such a big issue. My Omega provides a bit more functional Target ID than my T[sup]2[/sup] on mid-depth or deeper targets for typical "coin hunting" tasks, but when depth and good audio response are important, they both have their strong points.

Don't hesitate to spend ample time with the 10" concentric elliptical coil because it has more to offer than many might believe. I like the 11" coil for sites where most targets are 4" or deeper from the coil and where I have the opportunity to gain a bit of dept. The 5" DD is a killer coil. One thing to re,member is that while the Omega is a quick-response and fast-recover type model, you can over-sweep a coil from time to time, especially the 5" if you're working trashy conditions. A nice and methodically consistent sweep if really called for.

Keep us posted on hos things go in future posts, and if you don't mind, let us know your Ground Phase Read-out, Discriminate level and tone option, and the Sensitivity level you operate at. I prefer the highest-possible Sensitivity, reducing only enough if there is any EMI.
Happy Hunting,

Monte

it appears I will be able to step right in with the Omega...and you and Julien are both right, it really is a fun detector. The little bit I've used it, I really like the 10" coil. Going to give it and the other two a good workout this morning, if rain holds off. I want to check out the 11" and 5" to make sure they are in good working order, as I think it will be the Omega going on our upcoming trip with me. Later, HH jim tn

don't dig it all!..jim!..leave somethin'
for the next trip!..good luck with the omega!

I say that only as a caution because all too often people will try to "learn' an 11" or 5" DD based upon what the 10" concentric coil does/did or because they think a certain coil might perform a particular way. Smaller coil will often work better with a slower sweep. DD coils will sometimes have a little difficulty with iron trash rejection. Larger 11" elliptical DD coils (and others) tend to have response issued when swept too closely to shallow targets, such as coins in the surface to 3" range from the coil. Just spend some time to start learning them. Like me, you might want to eventually acquire a couple of lower rods to affix the coils to make field changes rapid.

Actually, I split my use so much between the 5" and 10", relying on the 11' for deeper depth and low-target sites, that I plan to keep the 11" at-the-ready and I'll buy another Omega and one will always have the 5" mounted, the other the 10". They, both the Omega and those coils, are that good and because I try to hunt as much as possible and like these coils, I'll just have a unit ready-to-grab regardless of the site I hunt. :)

There we have one of the magic words .... "FUN!" The Omega is light-weight, well balanced, easy to adjust, and just flat out fun to use. I love it!!

For a while I didn't like the looks of the 10" elliptical concentric coils, but that was due to a bias for round coils in the 5'-7" size range. The 10" concentric is just a great standard coil for some many uses that I have found it to be a top pick for me, and that's not easy for its one-direction size. :)

As I said, learn to appreciate all three coils because with the Omega, they really add up to a tremendous 'package' for all sorts of hunting needs. Good luck on your trip.

Monte how to cope with the nail coil 5 (nail coin) ??
While I enjoy reading and viewing a variety of videos that relate to searching in iron nail infested sites, as well as the use of different "objects' to cover the nails and coins, it is reality that I tend to deal with. I am working on a post to make shortly with a few descriptions I tinkered with yesterday using my Omega and 3 coils as well as my T[sup]2[/sup] and the stock 11"..

Thanks for the question.

I am pretty familar with the 5" and 11" DD coils as have used both a lot on my F 75 and then the 75 LTD. Each of the three, undoubtedly, have its place and calling.

To my old eyes, the 10" elliptical cencentric design gives it a small appearance.

Yep, am already looking into lower rods.

I did head out about 5:30 this morning to try and get in a good hunt with the Omega, but shortly thereafter, another round of showers hit and has been raining steady ever since. We needed the rain, but in many area's around we have now had up to 4 + inches. Either feast or famine, it seems. HH jim tn
