Omega 8500 3 coil package.

Well-known member
My Santa of 5+ decades put an Omega three coil package under the tree this year with my name on it. Our out of town son and his fiancee are here and, of course, a forecast of thunder storms, of which, they are currently correct, so no in ground testing taking place, for a while anyway. Merry Christmas to all, HH jim tn

Sounds like you were a good boy this past year... lol..can't wait to hear your thoughts about this rig, not much out there on it yet..good luck and hh.

I always like the Omega platform, so thought I would give one a try. In house and back yard it run pretty quiet. HH jim tn

Although I am still in the learning process with the 8500, first impressions are its a keeper.

Started out the morning on a old spot with my hunting buddy and we both were swinging our F 75's DST's. He hit a 64 Washington pretty near right off and it went down hill from there for both of us, digging a few pieces of clad and Mem. cents. I then decided to switch to the Omega 8500. I set it up in disc with 0 disc, sen 75, no notch, audio volume on 8, and in the DEEP mode D1 and tones d5. (no proportional). Also, I had on the 5" dd coil.

For the first hour or so I dug 5-6 clad dimes and 2 quarters and a couple of Memorial cents and 1 nickel. All, in the 2 to 5" depth range. Finally hit a low dime reading showing 7" and recovered a 1920 wheat cent from 6" deep. A little bit later I got a bouncy mid 80's to 92 reading and from a honest 8" (pro pin pointer measured) recovered a clad dime. Also had a dog tag at 7" and what appeared to be the top to a lipstick tube also at 7'. In no proportional audio the 8500 really hits targets hard. Can't help but wonder what kind of depth the 11" dd coil might get. Quite frankly, I am pretty amazed at the depth this 8500 got on several targets this morning with the 5" coil on.

The audio for me does seem to be somewhat clipped compared to the two Omega 8000's I had. I did play with DEEP D2 and D3 a little, but I don't yet understand those two settings. WHAT DOES D2 DEEP FILTER PLUS 60 HZ NOTCH MEAN(do) and the same for D3 50 HZ NOTCH? The F 75 is going to get a rest while I get better acquainted with this Omega.

I think the 60 and 50 hz filtering is for EMI from domestic electric supply - 60 hz for North America and 50 most other places.i,know my local underground electric service, puts out a lot of it and D2 quiets,it down some.

The machine is really deep if you put it in 1 tone...and instead of Using disc use the volume notch on the iron....then set it to Deep 1..which is no filter...

Thing is insanely deep and running in VCO in 1 tone..No Audio clipping...if there's some Noise from EMI I would reduce Sens first...if you need to go below 70 ..then go to deep 2 and you may find that you can go back up to higher gains maybe wide open...

the other audio options sound clipped as there non VCO like 3 tone 4 tone etc....Especially in the Deep 2 or 3..

The Deep zero is the Fast Audio mode and works well for unmasking also in 1 tone but turn Volume notch back on and raise the Disc to reject nail for Ancient site work...

One thing about the 8500 is you can null audio out without using disc so you still have depth that Zero disc provides...

Unique in that aspect..I find it deeper than an 8000 and a 8000 is deeeeeeeeep!! its just you have to set it up different to get the depth...

Deep 1 is on par with the 8000 for depth.. deep 2 or 3 is filtered and will clip..But allow you to hunt sites in urban areas especilly at high gain you used to could not..

Keith I found the one tone vco to be severely clipped as well. Now all metal vco is on point and very deep. 1 tone disc vco feels like 1/4 vco. Maybe I was in wrong deep setting but tried them all I thought.

Thanks for your help, observations and comments, guys. The clipped tone aspect is just a matter of getting used to, I believe. Knowing that it ran quiet for my urban hunting style and at least had the depth of the last Omega 8000 I had, a version 5, was what I wanted to see. Quite frankly, I never dug a 8" deep dime in the wild with the 5" coil with either of the two Omega's I previously owned.

I've had the 8500 briefly to two different spots that are emi plagued and it had no emi issues in either instance. That and the 8500's seemingly outstanding depth along with all the other good characteristics the Omega's have should make it one great coin shooter. HH jim tn

I agree, Jim. You'll notice the ID is not quite as tight as before but familiar enough.

Thanks, Craig, yeah, it is a little different beast. Sucker loves coins, though. Got about 3 hours in with it on a iron laden and hard hit spot after the rain front passed through today and besides a few pieces of clad and Memorial's, dug what appears to be a compact, 2 wheat cents and a 45 Merc. Nothing deep, except the compact was maybe 6." HH jim tn
