Omega 8500 Discrimination options

Mike Hillis

Well-known member
The Omega 8500 has four ways to discriminate unwanted targets.
1st way is with the tone id.
2nd way is with the normal Discrimination control.
3rd way is via the normal Notch Discrimination control.

The 4th way is via audio volume adjustments called Notch Volume.

Using the Notch Volume feature, each of the 9 categories ( Iron, Foil, Nickel, P-Tab, S-Cap, Zinc, Dime, Qtr) can have their own volume setting, including silencing any response in that category. There are a couple of benefits from using the volume control as a discrimination control:

_____by decreasing the volume to a very low level on the segments you would reject, you can still hear the responses in the rejected segments and by doing so still know what is happening under your coil and, if you wanted to, respond to them.

_____by silencing the responses of rejected segments, you will not hear any responses in the rejected segments but they will still display on the screen. There is also opportunity for better unmasking as the reject reset may be a bit slower than than the accepted targets reset. Anotherwords, the recovery speed for accpeted co-located targets may be a bit faster than the rejected accepted co-located targets recovery speed.

We have gotten familar with the FE Volume control for ferrous responses 1st Texas rolled out with the Eurotek Pro and subsequently added to other models. Now the Omega 8500 takes this FE Volume control to the next logical level and applies it to all the conductive categories.

And of course you can mix all four of these methods together :)

Thanks for your post, Mike. I know I am sure enjoying my Omega 8500. In fact, since Christmas day, I have only used my other detector, a F 75, one time in striving to get to know it well.

Like the 8000 Omega, it loves coins. And, I'll stop right here as I don't want to hi jack your post. But, please, keep your thoughts and knowledge of the 8500 coming. HH jim tn
