Omega air test

everyone needs to keep in mind that they should mention the settings used, the operating mode, the number of tones, etc., etc. Also, if they have an EMI during the test and the particular coin/coins used.
Most of us know, also, that there can be subtle little differences between individual specimens of detector models and search coils, so that can add to the differences we might see.

I have been busy with work, sidetracked with some detecting, helping a couple of guys out with their detectors, and trying to get a website up-and-running. I have a contest ("Research Puzzler Challenge") started that is a fundraiser for my society. The Grand Prize is a brand new 
T2! Some of the puzzler packets have been sold at a meting this past week and via a couple of supporting dealers, but we need the website functioning .... so, I've not had the time to do the air tests. I hope to get to them by sun=up tomorrow and I'll post the results and PM you as I stated.
I hope you've got better weather than we've been dealing with here.

Monte---I've been watching for your test results.---I figured you had been busy but would get them out.----You have been getting the rain but it's been COLD down here, at least I think so.-----But I'm such a "pansy" from being in the SW all winter.----I about freeze just going from the shop to the house.---I gotta get "toughtened up"!

-------DelToo cloudy to see the sun here, but improving. We had a family situation arise and my wife had to take off for a day and I had to work so I wasn't able to get the testing done as I wanted. My preference was to get out and away from urban annoyances and find a decent spot to do some "air tests," but that wasn't going to happen. I was limited to indoor testing, in our office, but here are some results.
Keep in mind that they really mean very little. I like to do a bench test with any detector, but it is to learn little nuances about a model or coils and NOT to see how it fares against other makes and models ... UNLESS YOU DO A SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS. So, with that said, let me just alert readers to the fact that these are only results for these two models and these coils under these conditions, period. They are not necessarily representative of what results you can anticipate in actual in-the-field hunting applications.
Location: Our office, complete with two operating computers and two cordless phones, a 42" flat panel display mounted on a nearby wall, and a lot of lighting. I turned off some of the closest fluorescent lights, but not all of them. The detector was positioned on a metal-free table and the search coils were propped up on a box of Kleenexes.
Battery Levels: In the new T2 I used four off-brand AA alkaline batteries that I have for my camera. They aren't fresh and the Teknetics T2 only showed two (2) battery bars for strength. I did testing in the morning yesterday and then again after I closed the office. The entire time the T2 showed two solid bars of battery strength, thus I was able to return those four batteries to my camera for a little more use.
My Omega 8000 had almost 16 hours of run-time on it and turned on with two (2) bars of battery strength, but after about 31 minutes of 'on time' it dropped to one (1) battery strength bar for the remainder of the testing yesterday morning and ran that way for about 10 minutes. I started this response before I had to go down to the office and work, so last evening, after closing up, I re-ran the tests. I turned the Omega 'On' at 6:50 PM and it showed 2 bars of battery strength. At 7:02 PM I noted that it had dropped to a single bar at some point of constant running time, and at 7:28 I noted that the single bar was flashing as I was finishing he tests with the stock 10" coil.
So, these are results of two models in a very noisy (EMI) environment and with less that peak battery power. Fair, in a way, because we often don't get to hunt in ideal conditions or with a fresh set of high-quality batteries.
Audio Source: I relied on the detector's internal speaker rather than use the Killer B Wasp or SunRay Pro Gold headphones. The T2 was set at full volume. My hearing isn't the greatest, either.
Coils Used: The Omega 5" DD which has an outside physical diameter of 4[size=small]5/8[/size]" across the center. The stock 10" Elliptical Concentric coil which measures 5

As I mentioned, I am not a big fan of any "air test" unless it is to compare to detectors under idential conditions. That means, both (or more) models at the same place and the same time with the same interference sources. I had plenty of interference, believe me.
So, yesterday after work I met a fellow for a little quick hunting at a playground/park before the rain returned. The Omega 8000 had been down to a flashing single bar on the battery check when I was finishing up, but after sitting in my van all day the batter had recouped a tiny bit. I pushed the last out of it for my battery test times and when I turned my Omega on it showed 2 then 1 then 2 bars. After about a minute of hunting I was back a 1 bar, and 15 minutes later I noticed it was flashing. Must have been an indication that rain was about to pour! The flashing rain warning was accurate.
This particular Energizer Gold battery had been in my parts and tool kit for about a year to year and a half. I got 17 Hr. 29 Min. of operating time with it and put in another new (but carried around for the same 1-1

Am thinking of trading my newer CZ-3D with hard case for a Teknetics Omega 8000 with 3 coils. In your opinion is it worth it? My CZ-3D only air tests a dime at about 6" AFTER I sent it back to Fisher to have it recalibrated. Your comments please.
