Omega gets my first Large Cent

digsgti

TROLL
Had time after work to go to a friends old farm house he said was built in the 1850's. I was having no luck at all till I tried over some driveway stones that were covered by about a quarter of an inch of dirt and grass. I got a hit that read 89 on the vdi and 3 inches down, so I was ready to dig a clad quarter and had my fingers crossed for silver. After going through the little bit of dirt then an inch of stones then an inch and half of hard ground as careful as I could without being able to dig my normal plug there it stuck out. About a centimeter of very green round edge protruded out from the side and I still wasnt sure what it was until I got a hold of it and rubbed off some dirt to see the imprinted text ''AMERICA'' along the edge. What a rush!

I washed it under water and gave just a rub with my fingers to get it a little cleaner. Not a fan of cleaning coins but might do a little research.

Congratulations on that large cent digsgti! Man that must have been a thrill! One day I hope to join you...

I've seen a few Large Cents announced recently on the forums. Maybe I'll go hit one or two places where I've found them here ... long, long ago, and hope nobody else has pushed through the brush. I've found my last few in Utah at a ghost town and at an old stage stop, but 'here' is in NW Oregon where we didn't have as many in use as there were 'back East.'

Unless I find a key-date coin I don't hesitate to clean my older coins. I just use care depending upon what they are and their condition. I hope you hit some more good old stuff again soon.
