Omega problem(s)

First Texas is giving a 5 year warranty that they know many people will never use, because we switch detectors like underwear. Original owner only, non transferable hmmmm, why? If you are proud enough to guarantee a five year life span, but leave an out, good marketing I suppose. The adage, buyer beware comes to mind.

Agree with you there, otlew. Although I'm sure glad I don't have to wash your underwear!

It would be a lot more about supporting the detector if it was 5 years and not just original owner.

A lot of other companies (Whites, Garrett and Minelab I think) do transfer warranties past the original owner. The downside is the warranty is only 2 years with those. I'm sure it's a lot easier for a company financially speaking to transfer warranties when you're only talking 2 years.

If you really want a great warranty...Tesoro's is the best in the business hands down. Lifetime warranty. Technically only for the original owner, but in practice it seems like they almost always honor the lifetime warranty even if it's not the original owner. They always have for me. Great people running and working for the company too.

But the reason my two main detectors are FT and not Tesoro is performance and quite frankly I think FT trumps Tesoro in performance even though Tesoros are good machines.

But I think I'll always have my Compadre because it is so simple and perfect for the kids in the family, occasional detecting friends who tag along, and people who give me permission to hunt their property in return for me offering them a chance to hunt their property too.

Marcomo,

Garrett Electronics, Inc. ("Garrett") warrants that each piece of security equipment manufactured by Garrett is protected by the following limited parts and labor warranty for a period of 24 (twenty-four) months (the "Warranty"). During this 24-month period Garrett will inspect and evaluate all equipment returned to its authorized repair station or factory to determine if the equipment meets Garrett's performance specifications. Garrett will repair or replace at no charge to the owner all parts determined faulty. This Warranty does not cover batteries nor any and all failures caused by abuse, tampering, theft, failure due to weather, battery acid or other contaminants and equipment repairs made by an unauthorized party.

My knowledge of Garrett's warranty..A friends elderly father fell over his Ace 250 and broke the lower and upper shaft. He called, explained and shipped to Garrett. They repaired it shipped back prepaid and did not charge him a penny. Like or dislike Garrett products, you got to love their customer service.

White's Warranty
If within two years (24 months) from the original date of purchase, your White's detector fails due to defects in either material or workmanship, White's will repair or replace at its option, all necessary parts without charge for parts or labor. Simply return the complete detector to the Dealer where you purchased it, or to your nearest Authorized Service Center. The unit must be accompanied by a detailed explanation of the symptoms of the failure. You must provide proof of date-of-purchase before the unit is serviced.

Whites only wants a receipt. Or so it would seem.

This is a transferable manufacturer warranty, which covers the instrument two years from the original purchase date, regardless of the owner

What are Minelab's Warranty Terms & Conditions?

Warranty Terms & Conditions [Extract]

2.1 Electronic control boxes (with the exception of the Excalibur*), Minelab branded search coils, handles, shafts, headphones, bags and battery chargers are under warranty for a period of 3 years (36 months) from the date of retail purchase (if you buy from a retailer, not and individual?) as set out in the warranty registration card ("date of purchase"); [* The Excalibur is warranted for a period of 1 year (12 months) from the date of purchase.]

2.2 Batteries and all accessory items not listed in paragraph 2.1 are under warranty for a period of 6 months from the date of purchase.

Finally Teknetics

The Omega metal detector is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship
under normal use for five years from the date of purchase to the original owner.

So if you buy a First Texas Product, you better buy it new and plan to keep it a while.

Most electronic components, if they do not fail in the first months of use, meaning not defective (referred to as infant mortality), will last a very long time if not abused. So what they are saying is if sell a bad one that fails in a short period time, we do feel obligated to make it right, unless you purchased it new.

I am keeping the Omega in the house for a couple of days to see if it is a humidity issue. I will let everyone know what I find out.
