Omega With 5 Inch Coil Strikes Silver Again:smile:

I found this 1920 Mercury Dime about 30 yards from where I found the silver ring the last time I was at this site. Both finds where about about 4 inches deep and each where found using the 5 inch coil.The Mercury dime gave a ID of 85. All the clad dimes that I found gave a ID of 84. I had to swing the detector with my left arm and dig with my left hand, because my right arm hasn't fully recovered from being broken. I still managed to dig 82 targets today. My modified T-handle Lesche digger that Buzz made for me sure made digging a lot easier.

Tab.....congrats And yes, my Omega reads 85 on silver dimes too up to approx 5" with 5" coil and 84 on clad dimes. Same phenomena on other silver coin denominations vs clad equivalents. The Omega rocks.

Habenero, the BC discrimination like other detectors is dependent on coil used. Use the stock concentric, very easy to tell. Use a DD coil, then one has to use special techniques to tell if its a BC. When I hunt BC infested areas, I don't use the 11" DD, its too big and tends to get multiple targets under coil. This messes up BC disc techniques one needs to use on a DD coil. I use the concentric or the awesomely deep 5" DD (which allows for BC techniques without multiple target syndrome).

So the "jerk" method is working for you very well on buried caps out in the field? Just curious b/c your linked post did not give any feedback related to that part of your testing. Hey, if it works very well we should probably rename it something besides the "jerk" method or at least call it the "Tabman jerk". What do you think? I also agree with your statement about the difficulty using this or any other method with the larger coil. My G2 has the 11" dd coil and in infested areas there is no way for me to do anything but dig them some times or just move on and wonder if it was a good target or not.

The 'jerk' method seems to be working just fine on buried pry caps using the 5 inch DD coil. Let me do some more testing before you start adding 'jerk' to my name.

Thanks Tabman for the great info. I went to a local park during my lunch break today and tried the "jerk" method with my Omega and 11" DD. Bottle caps all backed off to the 40's and 50's. Coins kept their ID numbers. I had one signal that was questionable because it would jump from 84 to 88 over and over. The "jerk" kept it at a consistent 88. I dug a quarter, rechecked the hole and had an 86. This was another quarter, rechecked again and had a 84 for a dime. They were all clad but it sure was a good learning experience.
