On frozen ground...first time out with se.......:detecting:

Well it hit 40 degrees they said would last about 3-4 hours...started to read owners manual and halfway thru... Decided to hit the park 2 blocks from house....Well the first 2-3 inches of ground were soft enough to dig...past that...forget about it! Ground was coming out in chunks! Well I guess I did ok for first time out...Pinpointing ok....vco the same as dfx but much louder..ouch! Had trouble pinpointing this reading 07 fer 22 con... hopefully was junk...had that reading quite a bit...whatever program Roy (Ga) was running is what I used..

WTG, Greg. Glad you got out! To dig that much, you either had more energy than I did, a pick, or else they were shallow.

The thing next to the coins is part of a belt buckle..and yes the coins were shallow...nothing past 3-4 inches... I did try to dig a signal at about 6 inches...no way!

Thanks...boy was I confused...I kept stopping and throwing a penny...dime..and quarter on the ground...did not have or find a nickel to test! I would then memorize the number and noticed the loud pitch...But the cold weather is coming right back so...will have plenty of time to finish owners manual and read posts.

Gregg, The SE is a great machine aint it?!? I got mine back in October and I'm still on the upward side of the learning curve. I was out today and had a couple 7-22 hits which I dug out anyhow. They turned out to be can slaw. I've found that FERROUS numbers of 6 or 7 can be iffy especially with a low 20's CONDUCTIVE number. The best advice is to dig and find out what it is. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks Pete I rember once in a while with the dfx when my pinpointing was not dead on..it would be junk...I just could not pinpoint that reading Pete...

makes detecting/pinpointing/readings difficult. Wait until you get it in a nice moist normal soil! I also suggest switching to ferrous that way your iron will have the low growl.

we lasted only an hour in the 50 degree temps. I attempted only 2 targets and it took 30 minutes on each one to get down 5". Never had any ground that hard to chisel in in the last 25 years. It was crazy and all I got were some blisters on my hands...a sore back...and a piece of frozen mud in my eye when it popped off the lesche and nailed me.

congrats on upgrading to the explorer! a couple hints: when hunting parks, hunt in conductive only! NEVER use auto-sensitivity. REALLY try and learn to use the smart screen. finally, when swinging, investigate ANY high-pitch change in tone, no matter how soft. the tones on the explorer don't lie. if you get a soft (low in volume) high pitch signal to repeat, dig it! at first you may chase some iron, but eventually you'll be able to tell the diff. between iron falses and deep coins. the deeper coins will not be "in your face" sounding signals. they will be subtle, but once you learn what you're listening for you'll be amazed at the depth. you'll also be amazed at all the silver you'll find in areas where you were sure you "got everything".

one more thing: be sure to heed Dan's advice. he sure knows what he's talking about. i'm lucky to hunt with him weekly, and he has taught me SO much about the explorer, which i've had since june of '07. the best way to learn what the deepies sound like is to hunt with someone like him and have him let you listen to deep signals that he has found. i've watched that dude pull tons of silver out of the ground! if you ever have a chance to come out to california, a hunt with dan, or anyone who knows the explorer inside and out, will help you TREMENDOUSLY!

good luck! i can't wait to see you start finding multiple silvers and wheats...you'll be in heaven. be patient!

You should come to Oz. No frozen ground ever, and 07-22 is usually a $2 coin, sometimes a $1 coin for some reason, and other times a bottle top. So mostly, when you get an 07-22, you know you're onto a good thing. The problem here is the heat. In your money 100 degrees + at lunchtime in the summer, and humidity to match.
