Crop the photos with the software that comes with the scanner. You should be able to position the pointer to one corner of the object and press and hold the left mouse button while moving the pointer to the opposite corner of the object. As you do this you should see an elastic box made up of dashed lines being streched around the around the actual item. Once you let go of the left mouse button, press the re-scan button and it will show you the cropped item with much better resolution and without the rest of the white scanner bed that you are showing, causing your item to look so small. I think the fact that you are using a scanner is great - that's what I use - and it's a much better way to photograph your finds than with a digital camera. Just make sure the DPI setting before you re-scan is such that the file size doesn't get too big as FindMall has a pretty low limit on pictures. I, myself, am using an Epson scanner with the accompanying software.
 
can't really tell by that photo but i don't think its silver. it looks like a play coin from the fifties that was made of aluminum.
