One more question on Gt Operation..When in Iron Mask

Elton

New member
do you null out good Silver targets or does the GT still hit on them ?? When is it good to run IM or not to run IM...

when you are in disc mode(iron mask on or off/doesnt matter) the sov will null over ANY target disced out. the disc starts out eliminating small iron, even on the 0 setting. turn your disc up as high as it will go and test some silver coins on it, you will see the disc does not raise that high to eliminate them/ null on them.

Whats the purpose of having it.. ALL Metal Operation ???

I use my Sovereigns with the iron mask on all the time, it seems to hit on coin close to iron better. In the owners manual it will state that with it on it may false on iron a little more, but will see coins in with iron a bit better, with it off it will null on the iron more and not see the coins that are close to iron.
The Sovereign all hate iron even at the lowest disc settings, but some will bleed though and give you a signals and with some experience you can tell the difference. Now on the GT it has a switch for all metal and when activated the toggle track/lock/pinpoint is now active and depends on where it is set as to what it will do, in disc it is not active and does no good, only when in all metal will it be active. Now I always leave mine in pinpoint as this is the only reason I will use all metal as all my hunting is in disc. Now the all metal is used by some and for prospecting is where the track and lock come in plus a few do hunt in all metal too so it does have a purpose.
Like the F-75 or the Explorers you have used it does take time to get used to the Sovereign, so it will be a little different, but have some patience and keep it simple to begin with and learn all you can about the Sovereign before making it too complicated. To start with I would run a little disc, no notch, threshold on, disc set with iron mask on, sensitivity auto and leave the track/lock/pinpoint in pinpoint so when you switch to all metal it will be in the pinpoint mode. Go slow and listen for the tones. Maybe it will help if you go to a newer area where coins maybe new, but not that deep to get the idea of what is good and bad before going to a tough location where targets are far and few and deep. Like I say make it simple as it will be easier to understand.

Good luck

Elton all metal mode and iron mask are two different settings. Like Rick states there is a brief explanation about using iron mask in the manual and I would suggest to test it on different sites/targets and see if it cleans up signals for you or not. Some say hunting with iron mask off is best for them some say iron mask on is best for them. when I hunt in disc mode with the sov I like iron mask on like Rick does.
I mostly beach hunt and prefer the all metal pinpoint mode which is no disc at all. I use disc mainly to occasionally cross check targets.

Iron Mask On means it will try harder to see coins mixed in iron and that's what I like to use all the time. Some who are working noisey sites will turn it off to quiet the machine down some. I never felt the need to do that.

You guys and girls ( treasurechic) have been a big help and I really appreciate you answering my questions. I will take your experienced advice.

Thanks Critterhunter

I too have gotten used to hunting with Iron Mask on, Why the heck not? It gives me the confidence I need knowing that If I should go over a good target next to iron I wont miss it. It is true that the machine can be a bit noisey, Id describe it as a quick "bark" like a dog. Thats when your going over alot of or big iron, but its a quick "bark" and not enough to be annoying in my opinion. The more you hear that the more Iron there is. I think alot of people dont realize how much iron can be in the ground at a site. Keep your threshold on just enough to hear the Iron nulling out and youd be surprised. P.S. Were all here and glad to help anytime, I wouldnt know half of what I do about this machine now if it wasnt for friendly people like we have on this Forum!
