Open for suggestions....

Pete in MI

New member
because I have had those DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis, i.e blood clots in my left leg) I have to wear a thigh high 'compression' stocking much like a nylon.

This poses 2 problems and looking for suggestions. (1) and the most serious is that because of the friction of caused by the sock rubbing against any pants I wear I become a giant capacitor...electronic device for storing electricity. Those who saw the Fantastic Four might recall the evil guy who shot electricity out of his fingers. If ya didn't see it you might have experiences 'static shocks' during the winter when the air is dry. Or maybe you recall rubbing a balloon on your head and the hair stands up on end. Well...ZAP!!! is what happens to me not a couple times a day but almost all day. Doesn't matter if I am inside or outside I get ZAPPED and HARD!.

I can't run around without the stocking and can't run around without pants. Can't always walk around bare foot and if I wear anything with rubber soles I just continue to build up a static charge like a big capacitor waiting to be discharged...hey Sherry doesn't even kiss me without touching my shoulder first...sure hurts lip to lip discharge.

So short of dragging a chain from my ankle like a convict who lost the ball off his ball and chain or running around pantless and shoeless...I have no answer. Just hope it doesn't mess up my detectors electronics.

Other thing is looking weird while water detecting. Imagine one white tanless leg and one flesh colored (nylon) leg sticking out from swim trunks. People already think detectorists are weird on the beach..this should help them prove we are.

One thought comes to mind...what happens when a charged capacitor enters water? I hear electricity and water don't do well together.

Maybe I should change my nickname to ZAP!!!!

Think twice about shaking my hand :stars:

My son used to work for Sony, they wore this little device on their heel that grounded them and sent all static to the floor.Didn't matter what type od shoe sole they had, this thing allways worked.
In fact, i think there may be one layin 'round here. If so, i can send it to ya and you can give it a try (?) Iffin i aint misstaken, he had some sort o' doodad he wore on his wrist also. I'll ask him 'bout these jist as soon as he graces us with a visit in the next couple o' days.
ZAP !!!.......cool moniker.:)
seriously tho, i would contact Minelab and inquire 'bout that thing affectin yer EX.

When I worked on electronic equipment I used to use one of those straps..but it had to be connected to the grounded equipment to work.
Sherry used to get shocks and I tried to create a bracelet for her ankle that ran down under her shoe and back up to the ankle...it didn't work very well. (Had to put the shoe on then the bracelet and reverse the process to get the shoe off.)

I sit in my recliner with the laptop on a board. As I try to get up I hold the computer with my left thumb and the board with both right and left hands. As I get up I usually get a shock..in my finger or thumb or into my belly OUCH!

I tried a pair of neoprene divers gloves to insulate me from the shock from the computer...electricity went right through the glove. OUCH again.

The shoe thing wouldn't work for this situation. I might for getting in and out of the van...usually get shocks touching the vehicle body...have to close the door by putting my hand on the window and closing it that way.

Then if I go into a building I get zapped touching the door handle of the building entrance. So the shoe thing might work for those situations.

Maybe I need to use a lightning rod as a walking stick and stay aware of storm clouds.

Wow Pete, i can relate. i get zzzapped in every way that you described, 'specialy exiting a vehicle and i don't have a "device" attatched to me.
Wish i could o' helped ya out bud.
MMMmmmm. i'll bet that Tractor Supply has some pretty cool lightning rods fer barns ya could make into a hat  ,sorry, i guess dat wasn't that funny. I know dem zzzaps hurt.
Good luck bud.

no offense Jim - good thing I wasn't drinking something when I read that or I'd be shooting it out my nose I was laughing so hard.

I needed the chuckle - thanks Jim.
