I have been reading forums for the last few weeks and joined this one not long after. I finally decided on a detector and placed my order for the F5 today. My only experience with a metal detector was a White's model I bought while stationed in Germany in 1978. It had 2 dials. I don't remember much more about it except I never got the hang of it. There also wasn't an internet with all of the incredible info and support. I was not aware of any clubs. So being on my own and not having any success, I did not do a whole lot of detecting. I was only out about $80. But I am certainly looking forward to my new one. I also plan on joining my local club.

You picked a fine detector, vannchan.
It's a very user-friendly detector, but there is a learning curve for someone just starting out so don't let yourself get discouraged.
To help you learn, do a search for all posts by "Mike Hillis". When they pop up, click on any that are in the Fisher F series forum. Mike is extremely proficient with the machine and he is the F5 guru here.
Just about any important thread on the F5 will have at least one post of his and by looking up his posts you'll be able to read Mike's advice and the thoughts, tips and comments from many other F5 users on those threads as well.

The availability of support, like this forum, did influence my selection. It also helps me to know I have a place to turn when I have questions. I have been reading a lot of the posts to get a feel for what is coming - the initial trying out, bench testing, practicing. And noticing the theme of finding a lot of junk. And it probably also helps that I have learned to be more patient than I was 30 years ago. Until it arrives I will have to settle for more reading. And figuring out my profile,signature,etc.
Welcome to the Forum, Mikes post about the F5 along with others influenced my decision to go with the F5 as well and I'm loving mine, I took all Mikes posts and compiled sorta an addition to the manual and a cheat sheet so to speak and it helped me out tremendously. I've racked up a 1891 Indian head penny and a 1925 standing liberty quarter so far with mine, along with a bunch of clad within my first week of hunting with the F5. Good luck with the F5 it's worth the learning curve and a good machine once you learn it's language.

I did two things today.
1- After much thinking and much research, I decided against the Garrett Ace 250 and the White MXT and ordered a Fisher F5
2- After lurking on this website for a couple of weeks I joined today.
I know that I made a good decision joining the forum and hope that I made the right choice with the F5.

My 
F5 came in yesterday. 
Prior commitments prevented me from putting it together before dark. I did assemble it and air tested it. I managed to play with it in my backyard after work today. Our house was built new a few years ago. We dug up the front yard to redo it and found so much trash left by builders and covered up it was pitiful - grass growing on pine boards, glass bottles broken and whole, rebar, bricks, etc. So when I tried out my machine in the the backyard, I knew a little bit about what I could expect. There is a lot of trash according to the signals I was getting and remembering some of what I've been reading the last 3 weeks while I waited. I did not have a lot of time but it felt good to be trying it out. I have Friday off so I plan on getting out then. I will be reading what I can and try to figure out what might be some reasonable settings for my initial hunt.

Colonial was nice enough to send me another. Be careful with that. I scratched the thread to tighten up knob.
I have nothing but trash in back yard. Running gain around 35, threshold at -3 and discrimination at 28. If I get intermittent response, I can turn discrimination down and it usually shows as Fe.
Used same settings and found several coins around driveway.
