Out Digging Some holes Today...Got A Few Keepers

Went and did a little peanut farm digging today and also to a large old grassy field that has yielded quite a few CW buttons and bullets over the years. I was running IM -16 with sensitivity at 28 and had a nice threshold most of the time...not bad for a 12.5" coil. The ground at both spots was very clean.

I had a few nice DEEP targets. I'll let the pictures speak...everything was 8 to 12 inches. Shown are a 1910 wheatie, a probable Colonial flat button, and a 1919 Merc. I also dug another flat button with no shank, a 3 ringer minnie and two musketballs, along with a few "whatz-it's". My buddy Darren was using his recently acquired Garrett GTI 2000 and hit an 1837 Large Cent at the farm. Sorry the picture is so weak, but the patina on the coin was heavy and because of the dark color, the overcast day, and the fact I was freezing my butt off (!!!) I didn't get a very clear shot of it. He was pretty happy though, it was his first LC.

Here are some pics I took...

Nice finds Mike. Great pics as always too. I have a few pics to post from today as well from my hunt this afternoon with the EX II and X-Terra 50 at my favorite 1830's farmsite...HH

Awesome finds. Even better pics!!! Must be a good camera. What id 00 - 28 the wheatie?? Sorry for all the ?'s just trying to learn all i can about different coils i dont have

......YET...lol

Thanks. Yeah, the wheatie was coming in at 02-28 and 00-28, depending on how I hit it. The camera is a Fuji Finepix A303, 3.2 megapixel...does well for me. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A303/A303A.HTM

The coil is a 12.5" that I got from KellyCo. It's a nice coil...picks up some deep stuff. Good if you have a clean site, or for the beach...great ground coverage, well balanced, and lightweight.

00 28 huh? weird! Here in Oklahoma soil mine "usually" ring a 3-28 or a 4-28. Sometimes they ring as a regular penny 7-25. You just never really know. I think corrosion, different soil and lawnmower strikes all effect things alot.

Yeah, I have seen them come in at that range also. It's the halo effect...specifically, the amount of green patina that they have on them. On the deeper wheaties with a nice patina...and this one was down there for about 95 years...they often fool me into thinking they're silver. On the shallower wheats that are in better condition due to the soil or other reasons they can come in closer to a regular penny. Though there's a lot more copper in the pre-1983 pennies. Post 1983 pennies have a lot of zinc in them, so they usually corrode rather quickly and have more ferrous content.

Yeah, I hear ya. I dug my first one up at the same farm a few years ago...an 1849. I was tickled to death. Here's a pic from that day. I also dug the medal there...it's 10K and sterling. The bullets and button were from a second site we hit.

Great finds Mike. I love LC and buttons. The merc appears to be in very nice condition. That field is kind to coins. It was WARM on Saturday here in NH. The ground stayed thawed all weekend. I scored a few goodies too. I'll post soon.

All our silver comes out of the ground looking great around here. It's the copper that takes it hard. Most Indians and LC's I've found are pretty rough. Up north and out west they seem to find them looking like they were dropped yesterday sometimes. Never like that here.

It's a Lesche Ground Shark. I wouldn't leave home without it. Makes digging almost easy. It's 28" long and has a cool rubber foot pedal...digs nice plugs, handles medium roots well, pushes down deep.
