Overcharged battery on the ETrac

Thrasher

New member
has anyone else on here ever gotten the message "overcharged" when they turn on their E-Trac for the first time after charging their stock battery ? this happened to me the other day when I took the battery off the charger, stuck it in the ETrac, went to my next door neighbor's house to hunt and when I turned it on, it said overcharged (or maybe just "overcharge", can't remember) on the display, made a musical note and immediately turned itself off... It did this about 5 times in a row before it finally powered up the way it is supposed to... has this ever happened to anyone else ? I have heard that the RNB batteries are a higher voltage than the stock Minelab battery too and I hear that they work great.... how in the heck could I have overcharged the stock battery ???

apparently this has never happened to anyone other than me... I googled about it and found something somewhere from a Minelab employee that was talking about how lithium batteries can cause this error message and make the machine shut down, but apparently it's just a safety feature in the detector to keep a battery from frying it. I'm still unsure how I overcharged a stock battery though.... I didn't do a single thing any differently. Hopefully someone else has seen this before and can chime in, but it only happened that one time... I believe it was right before Christmas and I've been out a couple of more times since then.

I have gotten "over voltage" on my last few hunts. Even after an hour or two of hunting. Made the tones and shut off. Seems really random as to when it happens. Even tried a friends extra battery, still did it. Had to do a reset every time to get it to turn back on. Now that the snow has fallen here I guess I am going to send it in.

I get "over voltage" from time to time on a fully charged stock battery. One thing I've found is to pull the battery out about 3/4 and drop it....with a slight amount of force. Haven't had this fail yet. It can be frustrating...I know.

that's what it was, "over voltage" !! just seems odd to happen all of the sudden. maybe there is some dirt down in the battery compartment causing a bad connection or something. I may see what I can do to clean the contacts on the battery and the detector and will cross my fingers that it doesn't happen again. thanks for the input guys, it's good to know that I'm not the only one with this problem.... hopefully it's not really a "problem" at all.

How would you clean the contacts on the machine?

I haven't seen that error in the four years of owning my ETrac.

A long Q_Tip for cleaning electronics or guns would do the trick for cleaning the deep contacts.

Just invest in the RNB battery (I love mine) and you will charge so infrequently it won't matter. Their charger also prevents overcharge. I hunt for 25-30 hours between charges now.
