P.I. tuning question--Over or Under?

Guest
Have been using my 'Cuda for about eight years now and I'm still not sure if the best deppth comes from overtuning (possibly with some delay to smooth the signal out) or barley audible tone. I did notice that in salt water there are some super deep signals that only come in as a ticking sound when the unit is overtuned. Any comments on how this difference operates with other pulse units would be good-- I think it's an important part of using a pulse well.

Hi CJC,
three questions...
What detector model is the 'Cuda? And....
What do you mean with "overtune"? How do you "overtune" your unit?
Chris.

If your tuning the threshold as to just hear it, this may not be correct for the Cuda.
The Barracuda derives it’s circuitry from the White’s Surfmaster design, and there should be a background threshold audio for best results.

Thankx for the responses, Mr. Bill and Chris. First, Chris, overtuning is when you use a high threshold, although this causes more unstability and requires a slower sweep. The 'Cuda is the Anchor Electronics Barracuda not a bad pulse, although not on par with Eric's machines. It is however distinct from the PI pro in that it has a sheilded coil, and gives a slightly sharper response on gold than any other target. Iron is less distinct also. I agree with you Mr. Bill, although most manufacturers will say that low threshold is best, to really get the most punch from the unit requires setting it up on the edge of where you can sweep comfortably with no noise. I find that using a sweep where you slow right down at the end of each pass allows better depth too by permitting higher settings without going at a snails pace.

Just a quick note. The Surfmaster PI coil is sheilded also. White's does it by using conductive coil shell material.
