Patterns do work

I tried using a coin pattern today. I was hunting a 15 Ft by 35 ft area along a streem in a park. The dirt was very dark and there was a lot of rusted metal and some pieces of aluminum from the ball park fense that was there. I worked the same area three ways. The first was sensitivity at 24, gain 7, and AM. Then again with sensitivity 24, gain 7, and 22 IM. Finally i used a coin pattern since that was what i was looking for. I found i was able to set the sensitivity at 28, gain 9, threshold tones 9 using this pattern. My finds were 4 wheats and a 1895 VF barder dime and a 1911D XF dime. The dimes came in very clear at 8 inches. Sometimes in a really iron trashy area you can benifit from just setting your detector for what you are hunting for. I figure today was about a $150 day for me... man i wanted that 1895 to have an 0 on it.

When I get a little extra cash I am going to buy a few grab bags of 19 & 20th century coins and make one specifically for that purpose. In theory and from your experience it should work very nicely.

I use a pattern quite a bit when coin hunting. Here are finds from yesterday using the coin pattern I made. I also have a real narrow nickel notch that seems to work real good. Eliminates a lot of trash but that also depends on the site.

Try to add fast response to the equation and lower sens so it can easier pick though the trash. (see good targets among the iron etc)

Just an idea.

I have never tried the fast response. Next time I go out I will try it like you suggested. Thanks for the tip.

Minerals and depth does make the coins responses float a bit, but ive had no problem hitting them and all i did was use the learn process of those coins i have. As for nickels... my finds have increased with this method. I did expand the screen a little but not much. Fast is the best way to hunt in trashy areas no doubt. Otherwise ive by pleased with my finds just using fast and deep OFF. Those dimes werent iffy signals they came in very clear as silver at 8".

the pattern that bill s shows on his post is a little confusing to me,as nickles on my se always hit at bottom just above the pin point button.i saw another post here that showed the same thing but don't remember who posted it--anyone else see that other post?????not complaining,,just wondering if i saw it right???

...you can create your own pattern by "learning" some coins you already have.

your user's manual will explain the process. (beginning on pg. 44 of the SE manual)

good luck!
