Peltor mod for Excalibur II

Navy Doc

New member
After watching Oldebeechnut's video several times on changing the Excalibur II headphones over to the Peltors, I finally got up the stones to try it myself. The cost of supplies for this modification is barely $25 if you've got a basic collection of tools. I fix people when they're broken, not electronics, so if I can do this anyone can. I didn't get it done as quickly as he did and I had to keep referring back to his video but it got done and the difference is unbelievable. The snuggness that they fit with and the blockage of outside noise when compared to the yellow headphones is astounding. Now we'll see how they fare out at the beach this weekend. Just make sure that you turn your volume down if you switch over to these. I almost blew out my eardrums. Take a look.

That's so funny I did the same thing. I had to back the volume way back! Hunters that don't have an upgraded pair of heaphones don't know what there missing......
Because they can't hear it LOL!

Thanks Doc for posting, I had posted it a few weeks ago on the Mod form..some reason, they pulled it. Was told someone complained.

Good to hear the Mod worked for you, thanks to Mr. Gold Master for coming up with this 6 years ago, he use's the 101's...these are even one step better with the double shell 105's

Should have a vid next winter on a custom set, like the GM's.........but with 60mm Piezo's

Just remember this will void your warranty

Well, I'm not sure how soon, but I plan on doing this mod to my excal headphones. Right now, everything sounds like tin - I can make distinctions between metals, screw caps, silver, but there has to be something better than these - they hurt my ears after a short while too. Thanks for the video OBN. I can't tell you how many of your videos I have watched, and watched them more than once or twice - I need to start a notebook on the steps you do... Good job!

My computer works, but can't get sound from anything on the internet :throw: so I can see the videos, just can't get the sound right now.

for tin fin

Thanks OBN - I have a much better idea of that step of it.

Tin Fin try plugging in a pair of ear buds to the computer that might work. OBN..... i watched the video looks simple enough, but you are using all the guts from the Xcal ones right? Doesnt that same company sell just the muffs that would fit the Xcal headphones? That alone would improve noise reduction. But man what a difference going from my Xcal to my SE with those comfortable Pro Golds. I get a chuckle out of all this symble (@#$%@) crap replacing names...... leaves you guessing who or what the heck they talking about lol.

Dew, I tried the ear buds ... nada. I just have to get hold of one friend of mine and have him go through it. I'm sure some setting got changed through and "automatic" update or something - I just can't find what or where it is. I got the Peltor's to use for this mod. I picked up two more sets to make headsets for my dad and my self for other MDers. Once I get those done, then I will work on the Excal.

This may be a silly question, but after the mod is done can the new headphones be used underwater?

Yes, the only issue maybe the little bit of foam in the headband cusion......may retain water. The crossover bands are SS...but the buzzer plates will be fine.

Thanks to all for another great post. Hopefully one day detector companys will understand the customer's needs, & that it should come first. I used to use a DetectorPro HHPI, what a great set of headphones. For what I paid for the Excal, I should get something that doesn't require modifications, but I plan to do it with the Yellow pair. I can't wait to hear what I've been missing.- :)minelab::nopity:).
