I took the "SE" out today to try it out.........just got it in the mail the other day. I have lived on this forum page and tried to read everyting I could while I anticipated its arrival.....It is outfitted with the 11" pro coil.....should I go to a smaller coil to prevent overlapping targets? May just be easier to learn it....

Today I was having problems with the ID numbers coming up slow on my screen. I am swinging this coil as slow as my grandmother used to swing her fly swatter and I am still having problems with identifying the target. A friend of mine runs his gain at 7, iron mask on, and I chose coins and jewelry...blocking out everything else....I still dug iron and bolts???? The "tones" are definately an "acquired taste", but I know the machine goes deeper than my V3 could ever think about.... I want to learn, and dig deep coinds with this thing!!! I have read the manual 3 times.......guess experience is the best learning tool, but advice is always welcome.

Thanks guys and girls,

"Z"

The higher you set sensitivity, the slower the response of the cursor will be if it is fairly trashy there.run in auto sensitivity for a while
you will learn to like it more as you get use to it.

The manual is not very helpful. Yes it takes the cursor a while to catch up so focus on the sounds. It takes a while but one day it will click and you will love it.

Hang in there...like the others have said, it will start to click for you the more hours you put in....nothing will compare to actual use of your machine on a regular basis.....Once you do, you will start to understand the sounds more, and rely on the screen less. Once you locate a target, you can use the "Minelab wiggle" on the signal....it's nothing more than moving your coil in a quicker motion back and forth directly over your target(no more than a few inches on either side). You'll be able to better isolate the desired signal from the trash around it, and help to give you a more solid ID. I don't think you need a smaller coil right now...learn the machine with the stock coil...that will be the one you use the most anyway.

Good luck!

I am gonna wear this thing out......I may just take it to a target rich enviroment and learn the coin signals first...I appreciate the advice and I will hopefully be posting silver and Indians soon!!

Z,

Your asking too much too soon! It will someday just "click", but not today. You should go to a relatively clean area first. That way you can just find targets and hear the tone of coins and get use to it. You could just go in the back yard and throw some coins out...not as fun but effective in learning. The SE is a super machine but different than the standard vlf detector. REPEATABLE true tone sounds are what you are wanting to hear. Then verify it with the ferrous/conductivity number screen. I think that is the easiest way.

Give me a call and I will talk you thru it.

GraigV3, Take the SE out and put her in the factory presets, take your time swing sloooow and look for high tones and a cursor in the upper right. Try a few coins and see where they hit, train your ear it will click at some point. When you come from your Whites to the Minelab you must slow your roll some. I still have Whites and Minelabs but you have to use the tools in a different way, hang in you will get it! Tom
