PI Coils

Coud someone tell me the difference between the thickness of coils. Whites sufmaster PI has a coil that appears to be about 3in. thick and the Goldquest ss coil appears to be about on inch thick. Is there a specific reason for this if they are both PI's. Sorry for the silly question.

The Surfmaster coil is made of a thin plastic material with a foam coil former inside, and needs to have an additional coil cover to give it any protection.
The coils Eric makes for the Goldquest SS are using the top shell as a holder of the coil windings, and are epoxy filled of a very tough material. This eliminates the need of the poor performing, foam coil former. They do not need a coil cover.
The reasons are cost. It considerably more expensive to make a coil like Eric

The Surfmaster coil shells are also used for other detectors in the Whites range that require multiple balanced windings. The horizontal space, although not used for the PI, is required for these other windings. My coil shells are designed only for use with a single winding in mind, resulting in the different section.
Eric.
