PI/ MPS differences on beaches?

I just purchased a modified minelab SD2000 for nuggets but am curious how this variation of PI detector would compare on beaches with PI detectors that are made specifically (other than water resistancy) for this purpose.

Charlie,
I have tested a modified SD2000 against my Goldquest SS. The depth on typical Australian coins is about the same, but the Goldquest has the edge on small gold rings that I have tested when set to slow SAT and REJECT to about 10uS.
Both coils were 11". Admittedly, the SD was set up with a DD coil, whilst the Goldquest utilises its mono coil. I guess if we crunch the numbers, the modified SD2000 and Goldquest are neck and neck on gold targets, which gave me quite a surprise initially.
I cannot speak for "other" PI's against the SD2000, but I'm confident the SD would send them packing. Accurate side by side tests against a Surfmaster show a consistent 1/3 depth advantage to the Goldquest on all targets.
I would like to again emphasize that the Goldquest SS will go significantly deeper on most targets, but especially GOLD, than other mainstream PI units.
Regards,
Tony.

Thanks Tony,
Do you have any experience with the Minelab SD series detectors on beaches?

Does anyone know if the 11" coil that comes with the SD2000 is waterproof...it runs rock solid on wet sand, but I'm afraid to go into the water with it...anyone with any experience with this?

Charlie,
Never really used my SD2000 that much on the beach, as I was mainly interested in gold detecting at the time. Having said that, the SD's and Minelab PI detectors do work superbly on beaches.
I can remember trying the SD2000 on dry sand, and discovering any range setting of Balance I and II would produce the same result. Minor changes in ground balance were needed in the wet sand. I was digging extremely deep holes with the 18" mono
Anyhow, the Goldquest SS cleans up where others have been. I keep confirming this by constantly digging very old and discoloured coins in all parts of the beach, and in the water. Did I mention the Goldquest is also 1/4 the price and weight of the SD !!
You will do well with either machine on the beach.
Tony.

I have tried my GP on the beach and it seems to work best with small monos. With the 10" elliptical coil, it nailed a fine 18ct ring at over 18". If you use a DD coil in the mono mode, you get limited discrimination too. I love it.
