Pin Pointer question

Hey folks! I have a question here. I haven't even receieved my detector yet, but thought I'd find out this answer now so I can be ready to go. The GTAx-550 apparently have "pinpointing" but how good is this!? Do you recommend I get a pinpointer/probe despite this feature!? How necessary is it and how well do they work!? I have heard good things on the vibra-probe....but it looks pricey.

The pinpoint on your 550 will be right on, so don't worry about that.I keep my vibra-probe with me whenever I hunt. Clads and older pennies tend to become the same color as the soil and are hard to find in a mound of dirt. The VP buzzes 'em right out and is also helpful when you have a coin on the side of your hole that you thought was in the bottom. It really boils down to how much you like getting down on your knees, standing up ,getting down on your knees, standing up, getting down on your knees, standing up. Some folks have no use for them and some love them. I love mine and feel it was well worth the price.

Wess,
I decided to try a Vibraprobe 560 and it's on it's way to me. I should have it waiting when I get back from Texas, I'll let you know how it works out. My 550 came with the 4.5" coil and if yours doesn't I would consider it if you are in trashy areas looking for coins. In the parks and schools around here I have found mine to be worth it's weight in clad coins !!!

I think I may just buy myself a vibra-probe. I'll just liquidate some of my old bottles I have found over the years. That way it's like getting it for free...I need to make the room anyhow
Bill, my 550 doesn't come with a 4.5" coil. It only comes with the 7x10 eliptical coil. Do you lose much depth hunting with a 4.5" coil??

Wess,
So far in the places I've been I haven't found anything deeper than 5 inches, but like I said before the schools and parks in my neighborhood are young ones. The 4.5" coil really picks the coins out from between all the can scraps and I still seem to get the depth. In my area I have been able to run my depth setting at max, but that will vary depending on your soil. I find more nickels when I use it because they don't get hidden in the trash signal. Once you get your detector and start swinging it you'll understand more about what you read on the different posts. Any questions these guys will be there to help you out. Good luck and HH, Bill

A lot of folks use pinpointers but if you learn your machine you don't need one. The Garretts are deadly on pinpointing. I've been doing this for over 40 years and never owned a pinpointer nor felt the need for one.

I'm mostly relic hunt, so I really love th VP on finding them little targets like .22 heads and such that are hard to pick out in the dirt. As far as coins, shells and such, I rarely use it. It sure is nice to have though, and won't go hunting without it.

Ditto!
I was ready to cash in a years worth of clads but was faced with, pin pointer v.s. 4.5" coil........
The coil is Dead Nutz when it hits a coin, and will pay for itself before the pointer will.
Well, that's my 2

Thanks for all your replies. The help is much appreciated and hopefully I'll be prepared somewhat when I get my 550. How much do the 4.5" coils go for!?

Think I paid $80.00 or so. http://www.kellycodetectors.com/garrett/gtax-accessories.htm
But I also got an additional tube to attach it to so I wouldn't have to mess around with the swapping from the stock to the 4.5 coil. Just swap the assy's themselves.

Mr. Hyde, I'm in total agreement with you. I'd only owned my Garrett about 2 months, and gone hunting about 4 times with it, when I bought a used pintpointer/probe from a fellow poster here, and I've found it quite useful.

I have found the use of a pinpointer very helpful when trying to find very small targets that have taken the color of the soil. 22shells, small bits of wire etc. tend to do this. Also, you can check the side of a hole that seems to keep getting deeper for nothing and will often find a crunched soda can or other trash target there where you couldn't put your ragular madnine's coil. They are useful in parks and on nice lawns as they are flea powered and if you can detect what you think is a coin you know it isn't very deep and can most likely be removed with little damage to the grass.
