Pinpointing in Discriminate Mode (Sovereign XS)

Had a couple of questions.

1) My Minelab Sovereign XS is sticking in "all metal" mode. After pinpointing and digging, I flip the switch back to "Discriminate" and nothing happens, its an off and on type problem and I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Is the switch bad or is there another problem other than that?

2) Due to the problem stated above, I have been pinpointing without switching to "all metal". Anyone else pinpoint in this manner? I have only started doing this today, not sure how accurate it is, compared to pinpointing in all-metal, but seems to work ok. I would like your thoughts and/or experiences on this.

Thanks....Jeremy Willis

like jhm says it sounds like dirt in the switch stopping it from operating properly. if not its a new swich it will need.
you can buy a spray to help with this kind of thing, take a look at this link ....http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ELECTRICAL-CONTACT-CLEANER-SPRAY-500ml-CAR-COMPUTER-PC_W0QQitemZ250510499883QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item3a5396e02b&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I almost ruined a detector one time by spraying the circuit board with contact cleaner. It reacted with the coating on the board. It would most likely be OK on a switch.

Thanks everyone. I hadn't thought of the dirt. I try to take care of it, but I have been using it for over 10 years, in all conditions from dust to mud and things are just catching up to it now I guess. I appreciate the advice!
