Pinpointing on my 550

Hey guys. Well, I hit a field today and didn't come up with too much. A couple of buttons, some square nails and a broken axe. I was having a hell of a time pinpointing today though! I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've tried to coil right on the ground, and I've tried it up a little off the ground. Same problem though. My meter is reading high no matter where I move the coil. Like it's constantly on a signal, which makes it impossible for me to pinpoint. Any ideas?

Did you release the pinpoint button and try it again? My 500 does that every now and then and the wierd part is when it does it I can point the coil at the sky and still get the pinpoint tone But if yours does it again, release the pinpoint button and move the coil away from the target then try it again and see what happens.

Thanks for the advice. I tried that however, and no luck

Bill can answer this for sure, but I think that what is happening is that the 550 isn't getting a good calibration on the ground when you first go into pinpoint mode (which is why you can point it at the sky and still get a signal). In other words when you first press the pinpoint button the detector is kind of taking a snapshot of the ground in order to see what it looks like without a target.
Try holding the 550 over a patch of ground that doesn't have a target in it (remember you won't hear a ding over a discriminated out target but that target will still mess up the pinpoint calibration) so look at the meter and make sure there isn't a target ID down in the iron range.
When you press the pinpoint button make sure the search coil is the same distance off the ground that you are going to use it at when you are pinpointing - you shouldn't be getting any signal if it calibrated correctly until you move the search coil over a target.

Not sure I understand your problem but when you locate a target ( and assume you have the 7x10 coil ) move the coil all the way off the target, press pinpoint and move back over the target, then move the coil side to side until you get the strongest signal then drag the coil straight back until the instant the signal quits. The target will be under the center tip of the inside oval on your coil. This is for coin-sized targets and slghtly larger.

Thanks for all your replies and help. Sorry Bill. I know my explanation of my problem was confusing. Don't worry, I remembered that technique as you explained it before...and that's what I have been doing. However, It seems I'll pull the coil down (waiting for the signal to stop) and the signal just keeps going forever, as far as I move the coil. Anywhere I move the coil pretty much. It's frustrating as hell, and makes pinpointing impossible. I have to use the x method, which I'm horrible at, not to mention it doesnt' indicate depth.

Is the button stuck down? Happens on my 2500 now and again.

The way I pin point a target is back off still the beeping goes away then swing the coil side to side till you hear the beep then swing the coil north to south to hear the beep dig there.

If you are in a highly mineralized area, you must make sure your coil is in contact with the ground before you hit the pinpoint button. In such areas, if you hit the pinpoint when your coil is above the ground, the pinpoint mode will just detect the ground no matter whether there is a target there or not. May not fit your situation, but just a wild stab. HB

Wess, it sounds like you've done most of the analysis.
I think it's time to call Mary at Garrett.
Good luck!

How do I go about getting in touch with Mary @ Garrett?? I only purchased my 550 not even a month ago, and sometimes it works as it should, most of the time however it doesn't. I am about 5 hours from home right now, and tried the 550 and pinpointing here in MUCh different soil...and I still get the same results. I don't want to contact anyone from garrett if this problem is from some lame mistake I am making...but I don't think it is. I have done everything as my manual and video stated, and have tried all of your suggestions. I'm lost. Anyone have a number for Mary @ garrett?

It is:
Mary will fill you in as to whether it is machine or operator error. That's what she is there for - to help Garrett owners out.

How high do you have your threshold set? Also your sensitivity. What happens when you air test the detector?
Bill

I was running in coins mode...which I believe sets the depth/sensitivity up around 9 or so....but I dropped it down to about 6.5 and have been running it like that as I thought that could be a factor. When I air test the detector at home, it picks up the signals fine.
