Pinpointing problems

Have a new explorer xs having problems with pinpointing, any help? Also thinking of buying a smaller coil for trashy areas.

1. look in your manual that came with your Explorer under Pinpointing if you got a manual.
If not? do this:
Put a quarter in the ground around 5" down.
Hit the pinpoint button
See the label on the middle front of your coil? The coin should be loudest under or near that label.
Sweep coil left to right. Notice that the coin can be loud under back end of coil too. So you must make sure you are hitting coin under label.
NOW take a 90 degree turn left or right AROUND the coil and pinpoint the coin seeing if you can hit it under the label again.
This keeps the pinpointing honest so you aren't accidentally hitting a coin on the back end of your coil in pinpointing.
So in effect you are X-ing over the coin under your label with pinpointing.
You can also back your coil off from under the label and slide the coin forward and back until you get the loudest under the label.

Thanks for the info. Also would you buy a smaller coil or a sunray x1 probe.

would you still buy a smaller coil for trashy areas or just a x-1 probe

I just can't encourage you enough. If you don't have the Sunray x-1 probe you are really losing valuable time digging around in a hole trying to find the target.
The X-1 probe will save countless hours that are better spent finding more things.
I would definately stick with the stock coil for a while.

Thanks but no thanks ....I will order a sun ray x-1 probe today...hay it's just money..
Thanks for responding

Not sure I understand the "thanks but no thanks" in your post.
But, oh well, must be a miscommunication on my part.

just got off the phone with sunray, they do not have an upper shaft for my detector have to send my upper shaft to them. they will be out of the office untile 11/16....
Thanks

You guys have missed the most important advantage of the XI Probe.
Because its so powerfull it allows you to locate a find in the part dug hole not yet exposed without damaging it.
Recenty I saw a coin worth

I have found with my Explorer XS and II, that I never use the pinpoint function. It is so easy to listen and just make the "+" over the signal and dig. And now with X-1 and WOT this job is even easier, but now with the WOT I get to practice pinpointing a lot more .
