Pinpointing question

I have read several post about difficulty pinpointing with the elliptical coil on the Ace 250. How does pinpointing compare on the Ace 250 with the elliptical coil on the GTP 1350?

Pinpointing with the Ace is as easy as it gets! Those that are having trouble with it must be trying to follow the instruction manual. That's hard! It needs to be rewritten using a decent approach. It is actually a very powerful asset of the detector of which volumes can be written about.
If you are used to the 1350, then they should be about the same. If you want blow by blow details, then I'll run you through it.

[quote Uncle Willy]About the same. Pinpointing with either is as easy or difficult as one makes it.

I couldn't agree more. At first I had a very difficult time pinpointing with the ACE. Reading the forums only made it more difficult. There is no substitution for practice!

It's funny, I never had a detector before my Ace 250. So without any experience to get messed up by, Pinpointing seemed very easy to me. I just dig where it "logically" appeared to be. Little did I know there was so much more to it! I'll probably have the same problem if I ever switch from the Ace 250 to another machine. We shall see...

Yeah I think John and me explained it about a 100 times on this and other forums. Some figured it out and some didn't. :)

Bill.
Instead of us writing the same answers to these sort of questions over and over again, would you be able to set up a FAQ thread with all these answers so that they are always at the top of the page. This way, instead of repeatably answering the same questions, we could direct new users to FAQ. Digger has done this on the X-Terra forum, and it works a treat. Sure would save writing the same thing over and over again; especially as I only use one finger to type with (very slow).
Thanks.
Mick Evans.

I'm sure that Guvner or Digger would help you out if you needed it.It will be a great asset if you are able to do it.

I have an Ace 250 and don't have a bit of trouble pinpointing with it. The premise of my question was, I never hear much about pinpointing problems with the GTP1350 , but I am always reading about pinpointing problems with the ACE250 and they both have elliptical coils. I quess it's because of more new and probably less experienced owners of the ACE.

I think an FAQ would work well. Another hobby of mine is smoking foods. There is a forum that I frequent for this that has "Ribs 101", "Brines 101" & so on. These beginner style sticky posts offer lots of info for noobees as well as a good reference for those that may have forgotten something. The downside is that these require some work to put together.

Unfortunately Nealcat, Im not able to help with your question. I have a 1350 that I use most of the time but I also have an Ace250 that I have messed with a little, but not enough to be of any help. I own a hobby shop and we rent out the Ace250. I used it enough to get familiar with the controls so I could give renters a quick rundown but thats about it.

Im getting better at pinpointing but I need more practice.

I also had problems pin pointing but eventually got it down more or less.
Doesn't it seem odd however, that on so many forums, it's the ACE 250 that so many people seem to have problems with?
I just don't see any other metal detector that people have made this a issue with. SO many people will write that the pin point is
NOT dead on. It will either be off to the right or off to the left or they cant find the target at all. I agree that Garrett should rewrite the
section in the manual so that people will not have issues with the pin point. Other than that, the Ace is a decent machine.
Now that the F2 is out I think there may be a decline in the Ace sales when people see how much better the F2 pinpoints and IDs the target.
But the F2 is new so I suspect it too will have bugs that need to be worked out.

I have only used the ACE 250 but I know from experience that probably like any other detector, it's practice. I have learned to be SPOT ON with mine. 99% of the time or even higher my hand held pointer is on the target as soon as I wiggle the hole with my screw driver. It's the 9481 coins I've found that got me there. For me, it didn't take long to see where that sweat spot was. :detecting:
