I had the same probs as you at first, heres how i do it and it works pretty well for me.
On signalls that do not display very deep ( look at the depth display )pass the coil repeatedly over the find and listen to the beeps, at the same time draw the coil slowly back towards you. When the beeps stop make a note of the place it stopped beeping then turn 90 degrees and do the same procedure again, when the beeping stops its is situated just in front of the tip of the coil.
On deeper targets ( check the depth display again ) move the coil to the side an inch or so from where the coil beeps passing over the target and press the pinpoint button, watch the bargraph display when tyhe display shows as much of the display filled in as you can get by moving the coil very small ammounts over the area the target should be just about behind the sticker on your coil nearer to you. This will vary slightly on each coil.
If you have a problem with iron near to the target using pinpoint mode raise the coil up from the ground a bit and do as above.
Its all a matter of practise i was useless at pinpointing to start with but practise will make you better. Try this at home in the garden.
Get a bit of cardboard and some tape. Get the kids to tape a coin to the underside of the cardboard and then you try to pinpoint where the coin is and stick a pin or nail or something through the cardboard to see how close you made it. You could go the whole hog and make a good raised test garden with a slide in and out sheet to test yourself on.
Try what i have said and let me know how you get on, i am stil a newbie to the quattro but i am starting to find it a lot easier to pinpoint with now, and remember to use the thing in all metal and listen to the machine. It takes a little getting used to but its worth it in the long run.
Heres a depth comparison chart for anyone doubting the quattros preformance, its a quirky machine but definatly one of the better ones out there once you are used to it.
