Pinpointing with the xterra 705 problems

I might as well be using a backhoe. I've followed the manual, but can't seem to master the teknique. A little help would be appreciated. I guess I'm spoiled with my explorer and T2.

Tell us more.
Are you using Pinpoint Sizing, or Pinpoint ID? Which coil?

Perhaps the easiest pinpoint method with that coil, is to pass the coil back and forth over the target as you draw the coil towards you. When the signal drops off, the target is right at the point of the coil.

Also, since HF coils are the least accurate on high conductors, you should learn to listen for changes in the response when using the above pinpointing method. On good high conductor targets the response won't change and will be a clean clear tone throughout the proceess. Junk targets that may sound good initially will often give a tone response that breaks as it reaches the edge of the detection field.

As Old Longhair stated swing the coil back and forth pulling it toward your feet slowly, when the tone drops out the target will be dead center the front of the coil. Works very well for me with the gold dd coil. If i am in sand I simply draw a visual line down the center of the coil, move the coil and take my pin pointer and drag it up and down the line. Pin pointer picks it up as you drag it through the sand.
Good luck
Matt

Solid small coil?? Do you mean the elliptical? I too swing back and forth towards my feet as OL mentioned. However, sometimes I find the target is right under the sticker on top of the coil. I put this down to the detection field not being as deep right at the front of the coil - a curved blade shape so to speak. If you find the target moves when you shift 90 degrees then try using that sticker as reference point.

I found with most detectors I use, if you find a target and activate the pinpoint too Close to metal the pin point won't work properly. Either none or constant tone. It helps to raise the coil away from any metal object then activate the pinpoint. As you bring the coil back to earth the pinpoint works as intended.
When I first Started detecting my Ace did this and I thought it was a lemon. Then I noticed the other unit I collected had a tendancy to do the same thing.

Ahhh...the advantage to being a sugar sand beach hunter using the 705/HF DD Elliptical for mostly fresh drops
Never have to PP, just narrow down the swing over the target while pulling back till no signal, give a few foot/toe digs, sweep the hole...nope, it's in the pile, kick it down, sweep..... and boom!!, there it is!..... Reach down, pick up, pocket and repeat.:smoke:
* Sorry, but it sure beats digging in the dirt and going to my knees:surrender: for every target. GL
