Platypus Coil Feedback & Other Large Coils Please...

Hello all,

It's been awhile since I have posted on this Forum. I had the Quattro this last year. I sold it and went back to the EX II again. ( I like the extra tweeking options).

Anyway, I have been searching the archives to get info on the Platypus Coil and larger coils like the WOT and the Sunray X-12. I haven't found too much to answer any of my questions such as additional depth, pinpointing and target separation.

So if any users of these 3 would comment/compare both the good and the bad that would be great. I am looking for a larger than stock coil to use going back to old parks and schools, etc.,

Again, input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have the WOT and the Platypus. They are both proven performers in my book.

The WOT is great for covering large, open areas that aren't too trashy.

The Platypus is similar, but I can take it into trashier locations and still pull out the deep stuff. The pointed tip is great for target separation.

Both get excellent depth.

Really couldn't find much feedback on it either... I'm interested in how it might handle at the beach. Nice to know it does work well in trashier areas though as I'd like something for better separation at some local parks.

and can attest that it's a great coil. I have gone back over areas that I used the stock coil on and found several older, deeper coins missed by the 10.5. I also have the X-8 and used the X-5, all good coils too for those trashy areas like curbs and parks. Monday I received the Platypus coil and today I received the Joey coil. I haven't had the chance to test them out in the field yet but so far the air test show great promise for both of these coils. Where in Ohio are you, maybe we can get together and you can try them out before you buy.

I have a Explorer XS and i have been using the Platypus coil for most of the year. The first couple weeks i used it i was ready to throw it in the trash. I couldnt find anything over 3 inches deep and no old coins. I noticed that the coins seemed to lock on better than the standand 10" coil but no depth. Finally i was goin out for a whole day, i told myself if i didnt find anything deep, i was going to get rid of it. I started getting deeper coins that day and since then i have fallen in love with this coil. I am getting the depth, i must not have been going over the deep stuff when i started using it. I definitely seems to work great in trashy areas and it definitely locks onto coins solid.

balanced. Does it make the explorer feel lighter? If it was a significant difference from the stock coil, it would definitly be worth a second look even if it only matched the stock coil in depth.
Shawn

So it will feel lighter. With the stock coil you notice that it is not mounted in the very center of the coil so it is not balanced as nice, but with the Platypus the shaft mount to the center of the coil. I like mine I have on my Explorer.

The Platypus coil like Rick says, is very well balanced and goes as deep as the stock coil. You can leave it on in most sites clean or with moderate thrash. One thing I didn't like was the taped on coil cover. I prefer a friction fit. So, I removed the cover and threw it in the thrash. Took some 180 grit sandpaper and sanded about an 1/8" off the bottom to lighten it some and square it up.
bought some Marine epoxy and sealed the bottom with a light coat. Now it is much lighter, no taped on cover and can swing all day without fatigue.
