Platypus just replaced my stock coil, Today's finds!

The Platypus coil arrived today along with the neat hat, pin and cool wrist band "Thanks Doc!," Managed to take the Platypus out for about two hours at this older site "1849" here in California.
Targets are slim pickings but when one does surface it's old, The area has been farm land the past century................The coil impressed me to the point it will replace my stock 10" coil for inland hunting, Several key issues are the main factor this coil excels over the stock for inland hunting.
(1) Lighter,
(2) More coverage,
(3) Depth is the same as the stock 10" coil,
(4) Better balanced "center mounted pole mount"
(5) Didn't notice any excessive masking due to the coil's added length" Appeared to have an edge over the stock coil,
(6) Sensitivity appears to be the same but a little more stable, Was able to run manual a tad higher.
Today's finds are,
Three pistol balls,
One broken handle,
one button,
one broken musical key? "that's two in a week"
one ???
Can't comment for beach use but will take the Platypus coil to the beach soon, Maybe Randy can jump in if he hits the beach before I do. Based from today's outing I feel the Platypus coil will be my main beach coil as well <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

I had just emailed the Guvner telling him that I was sort of disappointed that apparently no one got out and gave the Platypus a go. Maybe it was too early for reports.
And then your report got posted. I'm trying to be objective here, which is not easy, but I truly think this coil is going to be one hot momma.
At COILTEK we always try to fill a niche that hasn't been filled. Ralph at SunRay is the same.
COILTEK and SUNRAY have a great deal of respect for each other and we try not to duplicate each others efforts. If SUNRAY makes a 5 inch coil, well, then we are not going to make a 5 inch coil. The whole idea is to give you, the detectorists, more choices.
BUT, once again, we are always looking for a hole that has not been filled yet.
When Andy Sabisch first saw the Platypus his first question was, "So I'm not clear what niche this is supposed to fill. It's very much like the stock coil."
This was of course before he had hunted with it.
I said, "Andy, I realize that, however, it is lighter, and because it is perfectly balanced, it feels even lighter yet. We made it elliptical, thinking that is would be better on trash separation, because it is only 8.5 inches wide, but we made it 11.5 inches long to increase coverage just a bit and increase the depth to bring it back up to the standard of the stock coil. The general ballpark rule for an elliptical is, add the width to the length 8.5 + 11.5 = 20 and divide by 2 / = 10
and you have the approximate equivalent performance of a round coil. So in other words, the Platypus should get the same depth as a 10 inch round coil.
Now add to that the advantage that a narrower coil gives you when shoving the coil between bushes etc. and the fact that an elliptcal always is easier to pinpoint with and I think there is a niche there, we just didn't know there was a niche."
Also, we were criticized for making the Joey because we did not make it waterproof. We were trying to make a super light coil. So this was our first entry into the small waterproof coil arena.
NOW as for the wristband and the American Flag pin I tried to enclose in each order. If you didn't get yours with your order please let me know.
The wrist band and the Flag pins I had made up personally from my own designs. I have not been able to find really nice flag pins, so I designed my own and had them made to my specifications. The flag pins are quality hard cloisonne' and the wrist bands are just a further expression of my frustration.
I am sick up to my rear end with the Blame and Bash America First crowd! So I figure it's time we BAND together and show our colors. There is no country on the face of this earth that has done so much for so many and expected so little in return.
I am getting tired of activist judges who think their job is to make up laws as they go along. A government that was once of the people, by the people, and for the people, that is now just a collection of senators and representatives with their collective heads up the arses of every special interest group that drew a breath, from gay marriage, to wiping the name of GOD off every document that made this country great, to being obstructionists to judicial nominees. don't get me wrong, I have no objection to a gay man, and a gay woman getting married, as long as it's to each other.
I'm tired of everything we hold dear and sacred being denigrated.
I mean am I the only one that sees the irony in the fact that you cannot detect on National RECREATION areas. Detecting is RECREATION ! But just like everything else, the hidden agendas that lurk in our government seek to redefine everything from what marriage is, to what RECREATION is.
They will decide what is recreation, and you will live with it and like it, because after all, it's your tax dollars they use to maintain that land that you are not allowed to detect on, so how dare you think you should have a contrary opinion ?
So I had these wrist bands made up that say; "PROUD AMERICAN - GOD BLESS THE U.S."
It's basically a get in your face statement to the anti-American crowd that they can just get in line to kiss my Proud American Keester, because I'm not taking their crap anymore !
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of these pins and wrist bands is being donated to the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund for children who had a parent in the military who was killed in the war. The Freedom Alliance was founded my Lt. Oliver North!

Hi Paul,
looks like you didn't waste any time. I got home this afternoon and it was waiting for me. Mark also got his and we'll be trying out the coils at a school tomorrow. You'll probably beat me to the beach with it <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> .
I like the balance and feel of it on the Explorer. Had a hell of a time installing one of my extra lower shafts onto the coil. Took me about 40 minutes to get those two rubber washers to line up <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> .
I also think it's going to replace my the stock 10" coil at the parks. I think it's going to be a killer in those trashy parts of the parks and schools.
Can't wait to try it out tomorrow.

Well I dont know about the lighter I weighed my stock it was 1lb6.8oz and the platypus was 1lb.7oz but the balance is a plus going out tomorrow to give it a test run HH RonC #37
 
I would love to purchase a pin & bracelet but with low finances I couldn't pay a lot, but how much is the cost for each anyway and maybe I will try!

Doc, I for one, really enjoyed reading this article.
You enlightened me about the neat wrist band, and
the beautiful US Flag pin which I will wear as part of my dress suit attire....not to mention your
very well accepted viewpoints on those other items that you chose to elaborate on...You're the best, or
pretty close, Thanks ....I was only able to bench
test the Platypus, but will get out next week and
will give full report. About the large spacing
between the Coiltek coils and the lower shafts, I used a wider (either Garrett or Fisher ?) rubber
lower stem washer after first removing one side
washer from the EX2 lower shaft, and it did the trick...

Once during my drifter days, I drooled over the sight of those old ruins of mansions on the Palisades Parkway in New Jersey. Stopped, dug out my detector and 30 minutes into it, looked up to see two Park Rangers standing over me. Was told that confiscation of my detecor and truck, jail and or a $15,000 fine awaited me. The smaller Ranger was all set to run me in, but the larger one said that as I had Washington State plates on my truck, he's let me go with a warning. I vamoosed, but still dream of detecting the places.
