PLATYUS, ain't she pretty ?

Also are these weights including the cable? I would just like an accurate comparison. For me the weight reduction factor is a big selling point.
Thanks - Robin

maybe the platypus will make it so i don't hipmount the explorer.
if you haven't tried the joey coil on the explorer, you just wouldn't believe how light the whole set-up feels. the joey weighs 13 oz. and it feels like swinging almost nothing after swinging the stock coil.
one time, i mounted my vibraprobe on the explorer upper shaft just to see what the extra weight would feel like. it added just 9 oz.. and it felt terrible. i couldn't believe how heavy it felt to add just 9 oz.. i just wear the vibraprobe on my belt. i'm not swinging ANY extra weight here, not worth it in my opinion. takes the fun factor out.
so...maybe the platypus is a good replacement for the stock coil. afterall, weight seems to be the biggest complaint about the explorer.
so...Doc, can you give us an accurate comparison of the weight between the the stock coil and the platypus?
thanks.

The extras on my XS are the Probe, Sunray stand, and heavy duty metal armrest. With the stock coil this detector weighs a freakin ton. Justing picking up the thing now after three months not getting out (minus the probe) I wonder how I ever swing that beast. At the end of last year I started feeling some not so good arm pain so that might be a lesson to show just because you can swing a very heavy detector for any length of time doesn't mean it's not doing some type of damage. I really think this year I will be as good as any other, or it will be just the opposite and my arm will be shot. Carpal Tunnel is what I'm talking about.

now Doc tells us the platypus is only 16 oz..
i thought the thing was like 20 oz..
i might have to try one.

it's stable, quiet with high sensitivity, real deep, and smooth swinging with lot's of bottom surface area.
and talk about smooth swinging, the joey feels like it wants to sweep on it's on with that solid bottom cover.
now, i'm wondering how the patypus is going to feel.

A few years ago when I won the contest for best relic Minelab sent me a 2nd coil months later by mistake. I doubt they would have ever caught the mistake but I did what was right and e-mailed saying what had happend. It was asked of me if I would send the coil back and I did.
Now in May 2004 I win the contest and they couldn't give a damn about getting me my prize. I sure wish I had the e-mails to show how anxious this company was to receive their coil when I had it. Their communication system seem to work just fine then! If I had a time machine you can bet I would toy with them just the same way they are with several of us long time posters on this forum.
SHAME ON YOU MINELAB!!!!

that you will send the reconfigured covers to the people who got the taped ill fitting ones?

I really don't see how this coil can weigh only 3 oz more than the Joey.
If it's 16 oz without the cover and 20 oz with cover, I don't think it's going to feel that much lighter than the stock coil.

How about some hard facts on the Platypus compared to the stock coil. Weight (w/wo cover), exact size, stability (if available). I only ask about stability because I like to hunt with my sens. @ 32 in iron mask -12.

They are not ILL FITTING,we'd just like them to be tighter, knowing that 98% will have no problems, and there are 2% that will keep whacking it into a tree until it falls off.
Look at the picture, does it really look "ill-fitting?"
I'm sure you will wear the coil cover through before you need a new one.
If you have a problem with the one we have supplied we will take care of it. But let's not make up problems before there are any.
Take Care!
Doc
