RECOGNIZING A STROKE - A true story

Susie is recouping at an incredible pace for someone with a
massive stroke all because Sherry saw Susie stumble - -that is the
key that isn't mentioned below - and then she asked Susie the 3
questions. So simple - - this literally saved Susie's life - -
Suzie failed all three so 911 was called. Even
though she had normal blood pressure readings and did not appear
to be a stroke as she could converse to some extent with the
Paramedics they took her to the hospital right away. Thank God
for the sense to remember the 3 steps!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

*Ask the individual to SMILE.

*Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

*Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE.

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1
immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

After discovering that a group of nonmedical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions listed above here.
They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the
stroke and prevent brain damage.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

I was gonna kid you and ask: What if you can only do 2 out of 3, but seriously, bottomofeeder, that's some great information. My old roomate had a stroke after he moved into a new place and it almost killed him. Now he's permanantly disabled with slurring of speech and his left arm is pretty much paralized. This can be serious stuff, so thanks for the great tip.

Gi'day Bottomfeeder,
I only just read through your post about how to recognise a stroke victim. My opinion is that everyone should acquire at least some knowledge of first aid, especially if you have children. I think it's a suject that should be compulsary in the schools too. I seen many pareants caught in a situation with a child, and don't know what to do, panic, and make a problem worse. In my work, all employees must have at least level 2 in first aid (I also do), and do refresher courses every six months. As I live in the bush, it's neccessary as there are a lot of poisonous snakes around (tigers), red bellies and the occasional king browns. I also have to contend with a myriad of wolf like spiders, especially when I'm detecting. They're in the bark, just everywhere! So the chances of getting bitten by one could be the case. Anyway, I thought it was an interesting article. Good on you!
